A cold sunday afternoon was an apt time to visit. The audio tour takes 2 hours so arrive well before closing time if you want to take this option. An odd feeling as the lady at reception points out the places of "interest" not to...More

Very moving memorial, definitely a must for families with teenagers or adults in general. Need about two hours there to see everything.

The grounds are well kept and the audio guides are very good. It's a stark place to visit but necessary to understand just how horrific the regime was. We walked the stairs of death in sweltering heat and that very small amount of personal discomfort...More

Disturbing but necessary if we don't want history to repeat. I still can't understand how was possible. Hate will destroy us if we don't learn from our own mistakes.

My husband and I went with our tour group to this labor/death camp while staying in Linz. Having read many books about this period in history we thought we knew what to expect. Nothing could prepare us for this emotional and heartbreaking tour. Walking through...More

This well preserved concentration camp is a somber and grim testimony to those who suffered Nazi atrocities. It was primarily a work camp where prisoners were worked to death in a quarry. Others were executed by lethal injection or gassed. You can walk through the...More

Mauthausen is a well preserved prison/work/death camp. Between 1938 and 1945 over 200,000 people from all over Europe were held there and around 90,000 died there from starvation, overwork, disease or at the hands of the Nazis. At the entrance there are lots of monuments...More

Easy to get to from Linz, my GPS worked great. We paid for the walking audio guides. Took a few hours to see the whole place. I found the Stairs of Death and the quarry to be the most moving or horrifying locations. The gas...More

We were on a Rick Steves tour to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and were impressed with how the German society addressed the painful sides of its history. They do it with respect and non judgement. They present history in a way that one learns that...More

I just rented a car from Vienna and drove there. It is not too long and it can be done in one day easily.

I strongly recommend you to rent a car or go there by bus, since you'd pay a huge amount of money for a guide while the audio guide is soooo great and costs only 3€. It gives you all kind of details that I don't think a... More
