The other day,I visited this excellent memorial to the many people who were tortured and/or died at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp from 1938 to 1945.I saw the "Stairs of Death",the gas chambers, the crematoria,Block 20,and the other areas of this concentration camp located in a remote area about 25 miles from Linz.I listened to the firsthand accounts of the survivors of... Its a little difficult to get there, but it is totally worth it, a unique experience, we went by train from Vienna, and I got a taxi there.

The former concentration camp is very good renovated. As a result the barracks seem not as bad as they definitely war in World War II. The museum is very interesting. Entrance is free. Outside the camp there are several monuments to remember the victims of the different countries. Inside the camp you see plaques from many different countries, also unexpected... More

Have been to Dachau and to Auschwitz. I feel it is important to see places like this. So we went here as well while recently vacationing in Austria. There is always something more to learn. Each is different and just as moving. We didn't go down the steps the camp inmates had to go up with the blocks of stone... More

I had no desire to visit a camp. But we drove up there and it was compelling. So in we went and incredible it was. The buildings are restored, clean and quiet. You can reflect on what happened here without having horrific visuals overtake you. There are plaques along the outside wall commemorating who died there. Then, in beautiful tribute,... More

I saw many incredible sites in three weeks in Europe but nothing had the impact that my three hour visit to Mauthausen Camp provided. The audio guide provided detailed information and was powerful in its presentation. The self-guided tour is well organized and moves the visitor through the memorial, the camp, fields and the museum. It is a sobering walk... More

I had never heard of "Mauthausen", although I've a lot about Dachau. My wife and I went to both and Mauthausen aroused our emotions more. The slave labor camp at Mauthausen is still complete. Unlike Dachau, the buildings (e.g., sleeping quarters) have not been torn down and replaced with replicas. Although Dachau is discussed more in terms of war history,... More

We visited this memorial while we were in Austria. It is so difficult to fathom how anyone could perpetrate something like this. I learnt about this in history many years ago in school and have always wanted to visit. Take your time and reflect on what actually took place here. Make sure you take the audio tour with you as...
