About
The unique architecture of Schloss Eggenberg, the most important great house in Styria, is a complex symbolic representation of the universe. At the same time, with its impressive combination of Baroque interiors (magnificent state rooms), magical gardens and park, and priceless collections of the Universalmuseum Joanneum (Alte Galerie with its old masters paintings, Archaeology Museum and Coin Cabinet), Eggenberg contains a fascinatingly varied panorama of Styrian culture over the centuries. UNESCO World Heritage Site! Please note: dogs are not allowed in the park to protect our peacocks.

The tour guide was very friendly and informative. No pictures are permitted inside the state rooms that have no electric light. So all you see is from outside light throught the windows. There are 2 other parts to the extended ticket where pictures without flash were permitted. A gallery of religious icons and a coin gallery. The gardens are also extensive here with peacocks that are quite chatty! We parked on the street outside the palace and walked the short distance to the ticket office. We enjoyed the grounds and the palace for about 2 hours.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024
- Chelle L12 contributionsGreat place to visit. Very beautiful.Visited here with a friend, we had a 1PM English tour. Our guide was a lovely lady called Mia. She was very knowledgeable and made the tour very enjoyable!! The rooms are so beautiful to see. Only thing to note that it is under going restoration so some rooms are unable to see and the front of the building is covered until 2025 - so keep this in mind of your expectations. I would definitely recommend going to visit. Very easily accessible via tram.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 August 2024
- Edgars23 contributionsNice place to visit but probably not a must see location.Had limited time thus did not spend much time in the park. Place was undergoing some renovations which was not a pleasant surprise nor we were warned in advance - bit letdown. Overall place is in a very good condition, interesting exhibitions, immersive enough experience. Ticket prices are appropriate. Nice place to visit but probably not a must see location in my opinion.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 31 August 2024

Very, very cool Baroque palace with *such* an interesting history. Our tour guide was full of fascinating information, and the rooms have been preserved like a time capsule for the most part, due to that aforementioned history. Definitely recommend a stop here in Graz.

You actually pay twice the entrance fee
€2 at the entrance, for the walk in the garden and around the palace. If you go in for the paid tour on the 2nd floor, the €2 will be deducted here. You then pay 15 instead of 17 €. Both allow you to pay by card.
I can really recommend the 2nd floor tour. The wall paintings and furniture are really well preserved. The lady who showed us around gave a clear tour. Really great.

In winter, the castle is closed but it’s possible to get into the big garden and into the courtyards of the castle. If you have time and the weather is good, it worth it specially with children. They will enjoy the peacocks and ducks. A big space outdoor for children games is under construction. Announced to reopen in April 2020.

Interesting historical building with an ambivalent history through different eras and owners! Suffered not only from the Russian occupation in terms of substance and exhibits but also from disuse! However, it has been renovated in recent decades! Further renovation work is underway! Unfortunately, the furnishings are not as magnificent as in Vienna and Salzburg! The Japanese room and the altar area are worth seeing! Very beautiful park! The pub in the driveway is recommended! The boiled beef is delicious! Parking spaces are available on the way! Good for bad weather days! Warning: Taking photos, even with a mobile phone, is strictly prohibited!

A must place to visit UNESCO world heritage. The best preserved baroc castle as it was closed for a century. The history of the owners is really intreaging. Well prepared guided tour with a skilled personnel inside the cadtle. And the peacocks wondering in the lovely park are also worth a visit.

Note the the house is closed completely on Mondays. Tuesdays the only offer is the grounds for 2€ pp and guided tours of the staterooms for 9,50€ pp. Museums are closed. The rest of the house is closed. This is not clear at all on the website but they explain it very clearly when you show up in person. So trying to plan a trip to see this house was a fail. Too bad. Hope this helps other travelers so the same doesn't happen to you!

My husband and I took our three boys (14, 12, and 8 years old) here by tram from the center of Graz. The trams are very easy to use, although you should be aware, you need to press the button by the door for the doors to open - we didn't realize this at first and the tram left without us! The chateau is an easy walk from the tram stop. We had a wonderful day there and could have stayed hours longer. An interesting english speaking tour is offered and takes you through an entire level of the castle. The grounds are beautiful, with lots of peacocks walking around and many gardens to explore. There is a nice cafe on site where you can eat lunch or just have a snack. My 8 year old was fascinated by a coin museum located within the castle - you can use magnifying glasses to examine the many, many coins. I was surprised that the entire family really enjoyed the on-site art museum. We had to hurry through the last of it to catch our scheduled tour, but we could have spent much more time looking at the extensive art collection. It's not for young children, though - only go in if your kids can keep their hands to themselves. There is also an impressive archaeological museum onsite. It contains a real mummy! Finally, there's a fantastic huge playground onsite that even my 14 year old enjoyed. This place is a wonderful, easy way for a family to pass the day and get lots of great photos in the process!

Is there a cafe or restaurant at Schloss Eggenberger or do we need to bring a picnic?
Written 3 March 2019
No, but there’s a cafe/restaurant outside the Schloss but if it’s a lovely day I highly recommend a picnic in the grounds, which are beautiful. There are no picnic tables though, so you may want a rug.
There are lockers inside where you can store your picnic gear if in backpacks.
Make sure to say at the gate whether you are intending to go inside the Schloss as well.
You can also check the tour times ahead of going and put your name down with the front desk at the gift shop to book your place as tours can get busy & you don’t want to wait another couple of hours.
