An Opera House of Total Beauty

As someone who has seen a production and a concert in this opera house, it is one of the finest I have ever went to.

My mother and I were very fortunate to be able to catch the opening performance of El Juez. We were originally planning to get standing room tickets at the State Opera, but it is closed for July and August. We bought the €7 standing room tickets at Theater An der Wien. We went inside and got in line for the... More

I was lucky enough to see the current production of The Flying Dutchman here. If you're a fan of opera, or even if you're not, beg, borrow or steal a ticket. This production is in German with German surtitles, but despite my lack of language this production was utterly utterly compelling. I was captivated from the moment it began until... More

The two of us came here to see Figaro. The performance was excellent, but what we came to see more was the building itself and to just sit in one of the Opera boxes and soak up the atmosphere. A beautiful building which left us with great memories and a wonderful experience of seeing an Opera in Vienna.

Lovely place very special historic Saw the latest Marriage of Figaro - modern production which was totally pretentious with sub text beyond belief and for Vienna, average singing. A great pity .

During the summer fest we were able to see an astonishing production of Cosi fan Tutte directed by Michael Haneke. It was on the edgy side but exquisitely sung and acted by a cast of up and coming singers.

We saw the premiere of La Traviata conducted by Sian Williams. It was stunning. Wonderful voices, especially the baritone Germont. The theatre kent itself to the occasion. The sound travelled perfectly. As with most traditional theatres, the view was not perfect except from the expensive seats and legroom not abundant for a performance of 2 hours without interval. But it... More

We have come to Vienna twice to see opera performances here, and both performances were wonderful. I have read interviews with singers who say they love this theater because of its intimacy and the way it shows off the voice. The theater was opened in 1801 and Beethoven lived in the building while composing parts of the Third Symphony. On... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Vienna’s sixth district hosts high street shopping heaven and pedestrian area Mariahilfer Strasse. The weirdest local building is probably the city aquarium Haus des Meeres, housed in one of Vienna’s six remaining World War II defense towers, and topped with a rooftop bar that offers stunning views over Vienna and the centre. One of the most historic sites in the area is the passageway of 18th century Raimundhof with its small shops and cafés. It leads from Mariahilfer Strasse to Windmühlgasse. For a glimpse into the world of early 19th century theater, visit Semperdepot, the former depository for theatre decoration, which now hosts art exhibitions and fairs.
