The Volksoper Wien, located just ten minutes outside the city centre, stages operettas "Die Fledermaus - The Bat", "Merry Widow", etc.) as well as operas ("The Magic Flute", "La Traviata", etc.), classical musicals ("My Fair Lady", "The Whizard of Oz", etc.) and ballet ("The Snow Queen", etc.). The season, which runs from September to July, consists of some 300 performances divided among some 35 different productions and revivals from previous years. Vienna and operetta - people from far and near will join the two whenever one comes up. Intriguing melodies, swirling dancers, the joy of life - all come together in the classical Viennese Operetta. Much of the music known and loved the world over from composers such as Johann Strauß, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán ... come from operettas such as "Die Fledermaus", The Merry Widow", "Countess Mariza".

We visited the Volksoper with our two teenagers. The play was in german and no translation or explanation in advance was available. The musical Man from la Mancha was on itself quite nice and a nice experience but less suited for families that do not speak the language.

Great performance and beautiful set. Booked the tickets online a few months prior and went in smoothly with the ticket on my iPhone. The facility is not in the city center, but can be easily accessed by public transportation. There were no subtitles for the performance, but I prefer to study the plot beforehand than to read subtitles (which I... More

Booked tickets for Die Fledermaus several weeks before flying to Vienna. Culturall.com is where to buy online from- they have an English language option. I collected the tickets with no hassle at the ticket counter 20 minutes prior to the start of the opera. The performance was in German with English surtitles on a screen high above the stage. There... More

My parents and I visited the Volksoper to see the rarely performed opera 'La Wally' by Catalani. The building itself has quite simple but beautiful decoration and seats over a 1000. The orchestra pit housed a 60 piece orchestra that were fantastic and the stage had fabulous scenery and lighting throughout. The performers themselves were, of course, exceptional and I... More

We saw Don Giovanni in German/Italian with German subtitles. Our German's rubbish, but we really enjoyed it. Great set, super production. I love the Volksoper - a really great experience of contemporary opera production (if you want 18th century wigs etc, go somewhere else!) that really involves the audience. Lovely, and not too expensive. Easy to get to on the... More

The Volksoper is a well preserved building where everything works as it should. The shows are of high quality (excellent actors and musicians), tradition and innovation meet in harmony. The Volksoper's public is interestingly mixed from typical vienesse well dressed couples to adventurous tourists.Ticket prices are reasonable, most friendly for children. Enjoyed an excellent performance of "Axel am Himmelstor" in December... More

The theatre was beautiful. The seats were value for money. The facilities were excellent. The production was innovative and though occasionally the props and costumes got in the way a little bit it was wonderful.

Took my wife to see the barber of Seville although in German was still a great a experience. The lead lady blew us away with an unbelievable voice. We sat upstairs and the view was really good. May not be the state opera but the people here still dress up regardless, I didn't see a pair of jeans anywhere. Very... More
