in december, there is a massive christmas market outside the rathaus. once getting over the size of it (compared to every other market i had been to, this one is quite large and can seem overwhelming with the crowds), it was a lot of fun. tons of variety of things to buy and see and taste. everyone was so festive,... Had an amazing new year's celebration! The place is gorgeous, the five course meal is delicious, the wine is great but best of all is the program and the music! My husband and I had the best new year celebration ever and met great Lebanese and Turkish families.

Vienna knows hos to build a city hall, and the Rathaus is it. Wonderful Gothic architecture abounds. Ornate and inspiring. Inside is equally impresssive with red hues throughout the lower level. During the holidays the front of the Rathaus is occupied by the largest Christmas market in town. Hundreds of booths offering kitschy knick-knacks, local arts and crafts, and plenty... More

Christmas markets in Vienna are wonderful places to visit, and this is the "King" of Christmas markets. The building is lit up at night, and even outside of the Christmas season, it is a spectacular beauty to behold. Walking around the grounds itself is worth the trip, but you can often wander inside, and catch free concerts for example.

Rathaus is a striking building with a nice space outfront. I was there Christmas week so it was nice to see the Christmas Market and Ice Skating going on too. Apparently, in the summer it has film festivals going on. I'm a bit of an architecture fan and this place didn't disappoint with its Neo-Gothic spires and pointy windows. It's... More

This is an eye-catching, very beautiful Neo-gothic building, build for the city hall of Vienna in late 1800s. It replaced the old city hall. It is a very grand building and overshadows all close-by buildings, like the Burgtheater, the Parliament, the University and so on. It is located on the famous Ringstrasse. In front of the Rathaus is the Rathausplatz... More

Of all the Xmas markets, we preferred the one located here as it just seemed more alive than the others. Architecture of the surrounding buildings is fantastic so worth a look if nothing else.

Thank Phil D

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
