Trondheim's execution ground in ancient times. Benedictine monks built a monastery on the island very early in the 11th century, probably one of the first two monastries in Scandinavia. In 1658 it was converted into a prison and fortress, later becoming a customs house. Its most famous inmate was the Danish Count Peder Griffenfeld, who spent 18 years as a prisoner there. Today The Monks' Island is a popular recreational area, with a nice beach and a restaurant.

Old monastery, Second World War air defense place, old castle area. Nice little island for a picnic in sea scenery. I took a sightseeing tour from the docks with 200kr which ended up to the island. It was windy and rainy day so 15minutes around...More

Nice place. Especially in nice weather, it is great at Munkholmen. A short boat trip from the center of Trondheim. Bring a packed lunch and enjoy the day. Nice with a bath in Trondheimsfjorden. The building is worth a tour where one can hear about...More

We took the 5.00pm boat and asked specifically if we could see everything on the island without having to pay extra as we have learnt this is a common theme in Norway. We were assured we could walk round everything. However ....once there you can...More

We only had a few hours but managed to squeeze in this little trip (ferry every hour), which was lovely. Good weather, great views from the boat and the island, nice local food. Enjoyed it!

So, this was a complete waste of time. Had read the reviews, and knew we had missed the only guided tour today, but thought we'd go and explore a little anyways. That was a mistake. A short and rocky 15 min boat ride to the...More

Munkholmen was very nice. You can wander around the grounds as you like, and a guided tour is also available at certain times of day. You get here by ferry, and tickets can be bought from the kiosk very near the boat. Current price is...More

We did this as a shore excursion while on a Hurtigruten Cruise. The history is interesting, but there isn't that much to see.

Go there but do not make the mistake of booking a businessdinner at the restaurant. They lack the experience of serving a groupe it seems. Endles lines at the bufet and cold food as å result.
