The Hepworth Wakefield is Yorkshire's award-winning gallery designed by David Chipperfield Architects which opened to the public in May 2011. The UK's largest purpose-built gallery in over 50 years, we celebrate the achievements of one of Britain's most significant sculptors, Barbara Hepworth, in the city in which she was born and raised.

As well as the Hepworth Family Gift, a unique collection of Hepworth's working models gifted to Wakefield through the Art Fund, the gallery also holds the collection of the former Wakefield Art Gallery. Alongside collection displays, we also present a regularly changing programme of contemporary exhibitions by world-renowned artists as well as offering award-winning family and learning activities for all ages, a cafe bar and shop - a perfect day out for all the family. Free admission all year round.

visit to Hepworth

We had a lovely day out, we were visiting friends nearby and it was a dull rainy day. The art was interesting and we never expected to find such a treat in Wakefield

Love this place and amazed it's in Wakefield, it's an amazing gem of a place and when walking around you could easily feel like your walking around a art expo in Barcelona, it has that feel. Very good exhibitions held on regular occasions, they also do really good weekend events which attracts the crowds. Wakefield needs more places like this... More

As we were visiting a Craft Fayre organised by The Hepworth, we decided to pop into the art gallery as we hadn't been before. It's free to go in, but there are donation boxes around the whole center. Well looking at all the exhibits is let's say very interesting. It's all very modern, not really my cup of tea! But... More

I was pleased to hear that you decided to have a look round the gallery after visiting our Christmas Fair. Our Visitor Experience Assistants are positioned around the gallery and are very happy to talk about the art work. We also offer highlights tours of The Hepworth Prize Sculpture exhibition and our permanent collection on certain days of the week.... More

Went on a friend's suggestion and wasn't sure what to expect. Gallery itself was varied with a few things that caught my attention despite my lack of art knowledge. Nice activities for children and good outside play area. Cafe was very understaffed - we queued for half an hour to get a warm drink, which I don't really think is... More

Thank you for your feedback. Our exhibitions change every few months so it is worth checking our website for what is coming. In spring 2017 we will be exhibiting the works of the fashion designer J.W. Andersen alongside iconic fashion pieces and work from our art collection. It sounds like you visited us over our Christmas Fair which may explain... More

Even thought this is free if you want some culture just go to the Yorkshire sculpture park, there is little to do the only entertaining thing is listening to stuffy old pensioners in tweed jackets and silk handkerchief complaining that children shouldn't be allowed in there, this event is clearly for very pompous people that believe in only themselves. Facilities... More

The Hepworth has a beautiful setting spoiled slightly by rubbish. The overall experience is disappointing. There is only one floor of exhibitions which is quite small and in spite of the encouragement to bring your small children you are constantly told 'not to touch' by the numerous staff. This leaves you feeling that by your mere presence you're imposing upon... More

A range of modern art and sculptures as well a room dedicated to Barbara Hepworth. Most of the works were not to my taste. The gallery is well laid out and has a restaurant and shop. The parking across the road costs £5.00.

For a big gallery there wan't much going on here. I like the modern fashionable furniture but the gift shop was expensive.

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit. We currently have 6 exhibitions in 10 gallery spaces including the inaugural Hepworth Prize for Sculpture artists. Our exhibitions change every few months so perhaps one of our 2017 exhibitions will be more appealing to you. We also host a number of events throughout the year including our Christmas Market...
