BLUE BADGE PARKING ONLY IS AVAILABLE. OTHER PARKING PLEASE USE LOCAL PAY & DISPLAY. Head through the imposing gatehouse and step into 3,000 years of history. Explore the castle headland with one of our experienced guides for FREE or embark on your own journey through history with one of our audio tours and gain a fascinating insight into its past, from Iron Age settlements, to the Roman signal station and medieval chapel. The castle's heyday was in the 12th century when it was developed by Henry II and King John. This mighty castle has seen action in some of England's most defining battles. It was twice besieged by Parliamentarians in the Civil War, and has defended king and country from the Jacobites, Napoleon and the German Kaiser, when it came under bombardment during the First World War.

+ Beautiful castle, great view over the city and the sea. - Would not go close to their closing time as entrance fees aren't that cheap.

Great views. Coffee shop basic but nice and clean. Shame there is no parking as there is a hill up to the castle which some people may find a bit difficult. There is a pay car park about 10 minutes walk away.

Steep climb up the hill to the castle but once there the views are amazing. Plenty of room for my nieces to run around and explore and the audio guide is well worth doing if history interests you.

Worth a visit...be prepared for the hill climb up to it but the views are amazing If you have a disabled badge, you can drive in and park up the top. Toilets were very clean, there is a cafe but didn't go in.

It's a nice place to visit with plenty of space for the children to run around and plenty of history for the adults too. When I visited it with my family in the middle of October there weren't many people and that was a plus....More
