The West Somerset Railway runs from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard a distance of 27 odd miles that makes it the longest historic railway in England. We took it along the Bristol Channel coast as far as Watchet and back. It was a wonderful experience, a...More

Well presented, committed volunteers and a fantastic setting make this a memorable place to visit. Minor gripe, for a heritage railway please note that plastic waste bins and notices tied to posts with white cable ties on the platforms spoil the ambience.

Steam locomotives are a great draw, they have been all my life but some preserved railways I think miss the point. Can you imagine going to the National Gallery to see fantastic art only to find that the fabric of the museum is a mess?...More

Absolutely love this railway; the best heritage railway I've been on. What makes this stand-out is that at 22 miles (approx), it is the longest in the country and consequently you get real value for money; travelling end to end takes around 1hr 20 mins...More

As noted there are lots of nice places in MInehead. I'd recommend the Wheelhouse Cafe, 5 min walk from station. Also the cafe on the seafront is OK for the basics.

The seafront from Butlins to the Lifeboat station is flat. Be aware that it is, more often than not, windy. The road up to the shops and cafes is accessible with wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walkers. Blue Badge... More
