Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden was created around 1830 by Thomas Parr, a Warrington banker, as part of his estate totalling 150 acres. In the 1950's the estate was broken up and land was sold. In the 1970's the family mansion was destroyed in a fire and was demolished. The only surviving part of the original estate was the walled garden which over time became neglected and managed by different groups. As a result of assistance from the local community, the Friends of Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden and funding provided by English Partnerships and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the four-acre walled garden has now been restored to its former glory. The garden compromises of a Victorian kitchen garden with eight fully restored glass houses and a pleasure garden with three ponds. Today, this secret garden is a true asset to the community with an array of events, school programmes and workshops for adults, groups, children and families. Charges apply for some activities and events. New amenities include a community space, toilets, picnic tables and the Fountain Room Cafe which is open from 10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. on Saturdays & Sundays. The cafe may also open for selected events so please check the website or contact the office in advance. Closed Mondays

This place is a real gem. Run by volunteers, it is the walled kitchen garden of an old hall, no longer there. Ideally walk or cycle there, then reward yourself, with lunch or tea and cake in the lovely, restored greenhouses. Café is run by Ap.é Bars . You can book a table and café is open Friday, Saturday and... More

The gardens are lovely and the cafe has now expanded their food choice and is excellent. Lovely place for weekend breakfast or lunch. The bacon barns are fantastic filled with thick good quality bacon. Don't miss this lovely place.

We visited yesterday and were initially misled by our Satnav We eventually found the entrance and found a lovely small, but beautifully formed garden which I am sure, in full bloom, would be delightful Unfortunately, we were too early to appreciate the flora However, all was not lost because we tried the lovely cafe set in the garden This proved... The gardens are pretty enough but now the conservatory cafe is open Thursday Friday Saturday and Sunday for morning coffee and lunches. We visited on a sunny Apple Day in September so it was really busy but the queue for lunches soon went down and the meal beautiful. Quality food so well presented. Bought local honey which is the best... More

A definite hidden gem. Lovely little garden with a nice cafe - a good way to spend a couple of hours. The events are always a hit too.

We visited Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden for lunch on 19 February 2017. We had popped in a few weeks ago and were really impressed with that first visit. This time we enjoyed a snack and drinks for six of us and, once again, the service was excellent (even though it was busy). Dog walkers were sitting outside with their dogs... More

Yesterday we had a great walk around the Appleton Thorn and Grappenhall areas. It was a lovely morning and it was good to be out in the open air. We called for a drink in Grappenhall and had a lovely cup of tea in the gardens of Grappenhall Hess. I have often been told what a lovely place it is... More

I walk my dog daily and on occasions we meander up past the cricket club from Grappenhall Village to the Walled Garden. When we do go this route I often pop my head into the Walled Gardens for a look, and to see if there is any nice produce on offer from the store. It is always beautifully kept and... More
