Overview
More
Reached between the tides via a short causeway, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. The Lighthouse, completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques. Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers' cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The surrounding Nature Reserve contains an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and newly created wetland habitats.Wherever possible we are open seven days a week between May and September, and during weekends and school holidays in the winter. However, it is not possible for us to open on some days because of tidal conditions. The stated opening times can also be subject to variations on occasion due to weather affecting the times of the tide.

We visited during a weekend at Whitley bay and enjoyed the views from the island and lighthouse. There were seals on the rocks and plenty of birds on the wildlife reserve. The whole demeanour of the place is a little dated but I would imagine...More

The lighthouse is worth visiting anytime. Go to the rear and see the seals during the Spring. There is a hide with binoculars and a telescope provided free. Enjoy the visit.

Just north of Whitley Bay. Really interesting visit for those facinated by the sea and things maritime. Good preservation work and well presented museum. Seals on the rocks added bonus. Worth a visit.

We visited as the sun was going down. Stunning sea view with the lighthouse picked out in the sunlight. A very cold day, but well worth the visit.

One can take a good stroll along the beach to the lighthouse. The lighthouse and the surroundings are only accessible at low tide. I also recommend extending the stroll all along the beach up to Tynemouth. It takes about 2-3 hrs at a slow pace,...More

Great view of the lighthouse which is quaint and pretty. Lots of sand pools around to explore and great views of the sea.

137 steps going up and coming down - very hard on the knees as the stairs at the end are more like a ladder and are very steep. No hurry as long as it isn't busy.

If you google the attraction there is a list of tides/crossing times online, but this does not mean the tea shop etc will be open but you can still walk round the lighthouse and have a scramble over the rocks
