Reached between the tides via a short causeway, St. Mary's has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. The Lighthouse, completed in 1898 on a hazardous coast for shipping, remained operational until 1984 when it was superseded by modern navigational techniques. Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers' cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The surrounding Nature Reserve contains an area of rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and newly created wetland habitats.Wherever possible we are open seven days a week between May and September, and during weekends and school holidays in the winter. However, it is not possible for us to open on some days because of tidal conditions. The stated opening times can also be subject to variations on occasion due to weather affecting the times of the tide.

Parked easily on a damp Sunday late morning. Nice walk over the causeway, you can walk over the very slippery rocks & its quaint & scenic. Visitors centre isn't great- no fridge magnets!! Steep climb up the 137 steps to the top. Fascinating & step back in time. The views are great but impaired on a wet day by the... More

We have visited here many times over many years and always enjoy it, in all seasons and weathers. It still manages to feel as if you're a distance from the mainland and bustle, and there's always a quiet spot to enjoy the views. The lighthouse opening times need checking, as do tides for safe crossing times.

The lighthouse is spectacular and the surroundings quaint. Brilliant rock pooling either side of the causeway. And an increasing seal community to photograph (40)..? Small beach area to the left of causeway so flask and sarnies recommended. BUT.... google (tide) times as they dont have a siren or bell and people do get marooned on lighthouse

Took grandchildren on their first visit to this attraction, they thought the lighthouse was brilliant and enjoyed the climb to the top.The views are fantastic, they enjoyed the photographs and the cctv in the reception area.

Quick visit one evening. Car park easy to find. Wonderful setting with amazing views. The lighthouse turned pink as the sunset. Will be visiting again.

We went to the lighthouse this summer for the first time. The beach around it is perfect for rockpookling with the kids- take wellies though! The lighthouse itself is lovely but anyone with a fear of heights don't even try to climb it! I got half way and backed down! The exhibition is sweet and the shop is nice too.... More
