Housed in what was intended to be England's first agricultural college, this fine historic building is Pickering's hidden gem. We have 27 rooms or areas of separate displays, covering many aspects of local, social and family history, militaria and everything weird and wonderful. Thousands of objects are thoughtfully displayed in re-created period shops throughout the building. On our special event days we have a number of working craftspeople, covering such crafts as Printing, Blacksmithy, Costumery, Rag-rugging. Lacemaking, Quilling, Quilting, Spinning, Butter making etc. We have an Activities Room where children may play Victorian games, a riverside picnic area, a gift shop, modern toilets including disabled facility and baby changing unit, disabled access and DVD for disabled visitors. We are open 7 days a week from February to November. See website for times and prices.

Situated in a lovely, quiet part of Pickering by the beck, this museum is absolutely top class. It is situated in a historic old house that was once the first agricultural college in England and has a surprising 27 display areas including a printer's workshop, grocer's shop, gentlemen's outfitters and chemist. This is an exceptional museum of interest to every age. Staff are really helpful and so nice. Such good value and you need a good two hours to look at it all. Loved the rooms upstairs. it was like a smaller version of `Beamish` and mostly run by volunteers who have dedication. Freedom to roam around at your own pace... More

We had an hour to kill wile waiting for the stream train so I suggested popping in to the museum I didn't think was going to be very big from the out side but looks can be deceiving. They was so much to see and read it was definitely worth £6 per person. It was great fun and the lady's... More

First impressions are certainly deceiving on seeing our Grade II* building, we have 27 areas of exhibits, and we advise visitors there are lots to see. Our new admission system this year means that you pay once and can return as often as you wish for the next 12 months without any further payment. This is very beneficial when visitors... More

You could easily spend 2-3 hours here if you are interested in local/rural history. I am a 50-something history buff with an agricultural background, so this museum was fascinating for me...even on this, my second visit! It is easy to find as it is right in the town. I will return!

Offers a fascinating insight into the past of the Pickering district. Most visitors will really enjoy the recreated 'shops' (which include a village store, a gents' outfitter, a barber, a pub, a chemist, a printer and an ironmonger), but for me the highlight was the simply wonderful black and white photographs of the Sydney Smith Collection. They depict everyday life... More

We thank you for taking time to review our museum, in our 27 areas of exhibits we display many items covering the way our locals earned their living in days gone by. Went here with two children aged 14 and 11 on a wet day (Storm Doris was blowing though) during a family holiday. Ended up thanking the horrible weather rather than cursing it as if it had stayed nice we wouldn't have visited. Excellent, small museum with just the right balance of interest for children and adults alike. The quality and... More
