Bangor Abbey fell into disrepair following many Viking raids. It was partially restored by Saint Malachy in the 12th Century. The main body of the current Abbey dates from the 1830's and 1840's - but the tower is from the 15th century - and the octagonal steeple dates from 1693. The Bangor Abbey churchyard has many old gravestones - including... More

Bangor Abbey has an incredible history as only those who have heard of St. Gall will know. Visitors from St Gallen in Switzerland come here forging the links with the Abbey and bringing to life the history of Gall leaving these shores and settling there. A "must do" in Bangor.

This is actually an interesting place to visit and we were fortunate that a member of the congregation was there and showed us around and talked about the history of the church and the surrounding area. It transpired that some members of my husbands family are actually buried in the graveyard. The church itself is very peaceful and donations are... More

What a wonderful place to visit. The history and architecture was stunning. A very nice man spent lots of time explaining the history of the church and the area. It was fascinating and so much detail.

A great place to visit. It is steeped in history both within the church and also the graveyard. The church itself is has such a feeling of peace. The guides during the summer are ver friendly and so knowledgeable.

Walk around the inner part of the Abbey and enjoy the wonderful historic building. If you have the chance of a guided tour, you learn a lot of the past.
