We walked this down and up in May. We had headed up to Samaria but the cloud as low so came down. Irini was a really nice walk - we took 2 hours down and 2 back. Had a good breakfast at the taverna at...More

We did the bottom end near sundown in March 2016 and it was full of flowers and orchids. Did both ends again late April 2018, and there was very little water at the top, and just one orchid inside the gorge (been a very dry...More

3 hours up and 2.5 down with a late lunch at the Oasis taverna. The Dracunulus flowers in the spring are amazing. You can keep the other gorges this is the one. The new toilets and water points open in the summer are superb.

This gorge is delightful and much quieter than others. We got a taxi from Sougia to the start of the gorge 3 kms or so away to save a tedious walk uphill on tarmac. Although the ascent is 600 metres it's very gradual so not...More

Try to walk from Sougia to Lissos - it's easier as all the waymarkers are facing that direction. People said it takes one hour - that might be true for a regular hiker - but, for an average rambler like me it took 2 hours...More

Although we usually prefer hiking uphill, in this case we decided to walk downhill as one portion of the trail is very steep and the downhill access is much easier to reach if you are based in the north. Both tavernas at the trailheads are...More

Agia Irini Gorge in the south west of Crete is less crowded than the famous Samaria Gorge, and very beautiful. The gorge is located 43 km from Chania town and can be easily reached by local bus.

The small village of Agia Irini is located in a valley along the winding road that leads from Chania to Sougia in southwest Crete.

From the South end of the village of Agia Irini begins the gorge of Agia Irini. The gorge of Agia Irini is an excellent alternative to the gorge of Samaria.

Unprepared as we were, I would say it is not an easy stroll for the elderly or infirm! It was however worth it. A spur of the moment decision armed with a couple of bottles of water, I would say we were fortunate. The weather...More
