The most well-Known bridge over the Varosa river is the Ucanha bridge. It was probably built during the 14th-15th century and replaced another Roman bridge. The tower by the bridge was built in 1465 by the initiative of D. Fernando, abbot of Santa Maria de Salzedas monastery. The tower was the entrance to the mosnastic "couto" (land) and served as a toll that the travelers had to pay for crossing it.

Relying on the "Rough Guide" to Portugal we visited the historic village of Ucanha which is about 12 km from Lamego which has an old tollgate and bridge. There is a nice café/restaurant at one end worth a visit.

What a gem this place is. The tower and the stone bridge (the oldest in Europe) overlook a meandering stream. It used to be a toll house area for merchants. Children may find it boring but older people will find this place relaxing. A coffee...More
