This is the aviation extension of the Military Museum in Vienna, accessible by car or train, situated in the vicinity of Graz. We chose to drive here, it takes about one hour and a half on the motorway and we enjoyed it a lot. The collection is situated in an old brick hangar, accessible through a parking lot in front of a stadium some few hundred meters after passing the entrance to Zeltweg Air-force base. We explored the museum for about an hour, it features interesting items like the Saab 35 Draken, Bell 47 helicopter - the one used in MASH and some other 15 to 20 aircraft.
For the flight enthusiast this one is a must stop, I for sure enjoyed it.

We visited last weekend as this was on our Steiermark card and I thought my 3 year old son would like to look at planes. I was right and he did. All signage is in German (fair enough).
We spent about an hour here and that was fine for the non enthusiast.
The do have the 3D Ariel recognisance photos from the war time which you can view. I’ve seen these in documentaries but never in reality before. I very much liked this.

For us this was a good place to combine with others for a day out.

We enjoyed the exhibits very much. Only drawback for us was that we speak very basic German and there wasn’t any information in English on the exhibits or in a pamphlet. Is a bit difficult to find, if driving, park at the end of the car park (will make sense when you’re there!) and walk from there. If you follow the road past the car park you’ll have to reverse out. Top tip, the museum is free every first Sunday in the month!

having visited the main military history museum in Vienna the day before, I was keen to visit this aviation extension to the collection (much in the way that Duxford is an extension of the Imperial War Museum)- I travelled by train, which I booked before I went to Austria- the OBB (Austrian Railways) website is accessible in English and very easy to use. The journey was 2 hours 30 approx with one change; and very easily navigable as the OBB site will provide you with a journey itinerary and all announcements are also repeated in English- the trains are much better than the UK!!
If you are arriving by train, the museum isn't very well sign posted; the station at at Zeltweg has two exits- take the Hauptstrasse exit and follow the signs for the sports centre (Sportzentrum)- you will follow a straight road for about 5 minutes, go through a tunnel under the main road and the museum is on your right (it is sign posted from here)
The museum itself is set out over a medium sized hangar with a few exhibits outside, with a relatively well equipped shop that also has snacks and drinks. For the military enthusiast; there are some good exhibits to view; a couple of SAAB Drakens painted in the retirement colour schemes when the type went out of service, as well as a good selection of types the service flew from 1945 up until the late 1990s- especially some rare Russian and Italian types that I did not know had been in Austrian service. There are also some anti-aircraft weaponry and ground equipment on display- this is a good niche museum that is worth a visit.
None of the text accompanying the displays is in English so a good knowledge of military aviation is handy prior to the visit. Also, the size of the museum is the equivalent of a single hanger at Hendon or Duxford, so can be done in 1-2 hours max, which you may wish to consider if you are making the trip especially- I had time to spares as a result but the town of Zeltweg is worth a visit as are the local pubs!
Despite my best efforts; the perimeter of Zeltweg Airbase (which is Austria's main jet base) does not appear to be accessible as it would be in this country, so those who may wish to do a bit of spotting may struggle- by standing at the entrance of the museum however (and the walk up) I could easily see Austrian Eurofighters landing and overflying the base which was good!!
