A fantastic insight into the world of Roman everyday life. The audio-visual presentation brings it to life. The visit to the villa itself is a guided tour. Despite the efforts of our charming and knowledgeable guide you need a better knowledge of French than mine to completely understand.

Several Roman villas are know to have exaisted along the banks of the Garonne, but few have been excavated. This was clearly one of a very wealthy individual. There is a good visual representation of what the latest phase villa looked like using a projection system and there are many fine frescoes. While there are many fine artefacts on display, sadly they are not given a context. We had a tour of the villa, in French, but the guide was not as good as the one we had at Blaye Museum and our lack of French let us down. However, there was one very unusual feature her - a underfloor heating system in the shape of a saltire instead of the very common hypocaust system It has been estimated that this would have created a maximum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius instead of 25-27 degrees for th intended room. Worth a visit, but to visit the site you need to descend stairs.

Upon our arrival to this site we were warmly greeted and given an information package that would allow us to learn about the exhibits in English. We were invited to see a short film, also in English, that was excellent and informative. The artifacts are well explained were were amazed at the professionalism of the entire team that have worked so hard to tell the story of the Roman home. The site is not large and doesn't take too much time but well worth the stop. Very accessible. A must see.

We will have a free day inBlaye as the organised excursion from our river cruise does not appeal. We would love to go to the Roman villa. Is this feasible and how would we get there?
