All the gardens I have visited have been manicured and designed to look tame and domesticated. There is nothing wrong in this style. Il Giardino della Valle is unusuall in that it has been allowed to grow as a wild garden. I was not able to visit the whole garden. the little I did visit was a pleasure to walk... More

It took a bit of time to find the entrance of of this lovely garden but well worth the hike up the hill. This reminded me of "The Secret Garden", the lovely book I read as a child. Apparently, this area was once a dumping ground until several neighbors decided to turn it into a garden. Tons of cool little... More

It is not only a lush, verdant and quiet green spot, but also a very special place with a very special history. It dates back to 40 years ago, when a wonderful woman, Mrs Ida Frati, grew tired to see an illicit garbage dump destroying the narrow valley along the perimeter of Villa d'Este. She decided to take action and... More

I stayed in Cernobbio for 2 weeks and went for a walk up the mountain every morning. I finished a couple of my walks by strolling through this beautiful garden which I believe is cared for by volunteers. A must if you are visiting the magnificent Cernobbio!

This is an informal garden in great contrast to the groomed grounds of the Villas surrounding Lake Como. It was mostly greenery - few flowers. but it was cool, quiet - a pleasant retreat.

This garden was not easy to find, but it is a lovely walk down the hill to the lake once you have found it. Wear good shoes.

This 'garden' is the result of several years of restoration of a little river valley running down to Cernobbio. It is hard to believe that it was once used to dump rubbish! Volunteers have created a magical series of tiny terraces and wooden bridges with lush planting a of a variety of flowers, shrubs and trees. Lots of little side... More
