This castle, in the very center of the town, do not seem to have served a protective role, as it is not in an elevation, certainly because there are not many in this region. Very well conserved, it is a nice place to know.

"You only need to ask! Then Ferrara will embrace you with the most welcome"...once I was told it worked like that in Ferrara for visitors and honestly, I was blown away and mind blown with the beauty and charming of the castle. Look at it for yourself especially on both sunny days and foggy days (ferrara's signature)...it might be too... More

This is well worth a visit. Few tourists around. Good atmosphere and very calm and peaceful. A good place for peace and quiet which is steeped in history.

This castle is the biggest attraction in the beautiful city of Ferrara. It's located right in the city center and it is walking distance from the train station, about a 20 -25 minute walk. It is definitely worth visiting as well as visiting the city of Ferrara where there are many other attractions to visit as well like museums etc.

Massive, magnificent and steeped in history, Castello Estense dominates the city centre with its impressive towers, moat and bridges. It was built to inspire awe by the Este dynasty, and has been the scene of many dramatic episodes in their lives. Go down into the dungeons and see the dark prison where two illicit lovers were executed on the orders... More

Small castle in the centre of the town. Optional trips up to the tower turrets are possible, for a small additional fee. Orange trees planted on a castle balcony make a nice photo stop.

This is the most important castle in Ferrara. In this beautiful medieval city, the castle in the downtown stands out and it's beauty is magical mostly during fireworks which is in summer time. The lighted moat during night gives to the castle a magical atmosphere even during foggy days. The castle can be sightseen even if some of the rooms... More

This castle shows all the political and militaristic power of the d'Este family in the late XIV century. The medieval construction still remains in great conditions, apart from the outer tower. The enormous drawbridge and the giant cannon balls at the main entrance give immediately an idea of the purpose of the castle

I'm not a huge fan of Castles but Castello Estense was very enjoyable. Out of main season it wasn't packed and we enjoyed a reasonably priced slice of history. Mind your head in the dungeons. The doors are tiny!
