Strolling along via Roma, the city’s main street full of beautiful shops and historic palazzos, it is hard to imagine that below the street level there is an extraordinary world waiting to be discovered , consisting of the sturdy arches of the Roman viaduct. This work, built in the third century B.C., was created to bring the street up to a level high enough to avoid flooding and Via Salaria becoming a swamp. This was the ancient salt route entering town and leading to the forum in todays piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The structure consists of grandiose roman vaults, incorporated into a few noble residences, reminiscent of the city of Rieti’s past. Guided tours are often organized in loco upon request, even for small groups.

Rita Giovanelli takes small groups underground the city of Rieti and explains how the valley was drained by the populace ages ago so the Salt Road from the coast to Rome could be traversed. You see intact rooms with arches built that once housed boats...More

A great two-hour tour above-ground and below, with a very informative commentary -- my wife and I had our own English-speaking guide, while the eight Italians had their own guide. Made us appreciate Rieti even more. 15 Euros per person -- ignore most everything the...More

We Emailed to ask about a tour (rietidascoprire@vodafone.it) and received a reply and tour-times for our party of six immediately. The guide herself was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and the underground rooms and corridors are beautifully presented. Kids and grown ups loved it (and it...More

Our agriturismo recommended this. You meet the guide by the ponte Romano at 11. If there's no one there there's a telephone number on the notice board by the bridge (the bridge is actually modern- you can see the old one in the water). They...More
