Warning to anyone relying on public transport/taxis! Pre-book transport to your accommodation before arriving. We believed we would be able to get a taxi to our hotel from the station but unfortunately we were left high and dry!! Having phoned several taxi numbers without success it was only thanks to the kindness of a stranger that got us to our hotel. Google maps say it's a 9 minute walk, utter rubbish, especially with luggage. However, it's a beautiful medieval town and well worth a visit with your own transport

Amazing little town with beautiful buildings everywhere you look. It is very touristy (understandably so), therefore it’s best to get there early to enjoy at its best and to find a parking space.
However, it’s not the south of France type of crowd and is a must seen in the area.

Stunning place. Take a trip in the glass lift to the top of the bell tower for great views. Excellent train service from Bergerac. Market on a Wednesday so may be a busy day. Lovely shops. 15 min walk from train station but a lovely walk

Enchanting and quaint medieval town with lots of restaurants and cafes. Lovely to walk around and night with buildings lit. Very touristy, especially during market day.

If you are in the Dordogne the Sarlat must be visited. Parking is tricky but you will be rewarded by a medieval town with narrow streets and tall building. Many of the shops, of course, are designed for tourists but there are plenty of local produce and artisan products. You may have to look beyond the main streets however.

Nice calm little town, felt very at home even though we didn’t speak French. Everyone is friendly, and the market street was very relaxing to walk down, the shops were all interesting. Various international cuisines were available, but the local duck dishes and foie gras was the far superior choice.
When we went there happened to be a carnival or some sort of fair as well. It had just about enough variety of games for a fun night with friends.

Quite amazing city. So many wonderful old stone buildings and such variety of styles. Nice to see all independent shops and virtually none empty. The overhead colorful lighting is spectacular.

Great place just to walk around and the market days were wonderful to see. The old city is intact and so interesting to see. Many, many nice place to eat, or just sit with a drink and watch the world go by. Don't miss touring the Crowd-Magnon caves and troglodyte sites. We toured with Exploreo 24 and highly recommend them

Hi we are planning one night for a friend's birthday 2nd September and wondered if this will still be a busy, crowded time.
Will it be difficult to park?
Recommendations for a memorable birthday dinner venue.
Thankyou

Type in “Rue de la Republique” in your Sat Nav and you’ll find a relative quiet long street, with free parking spaces and at a max 5 minute walk from the old city centre.

What advice do you have for a person traveling without a car in the Dordogne region?

Don’t go— need a car to go everywhere! We were there for a month recently in a small village 10 minutes from Sarlat and saw many bus stops and not one bus outside town. In fact, few in town as well. You’ll miss all this region has to offer without a car. And I say this as a person who dislikes car travel and loves good train travel. FYI

In Sept., my husband and I want to go to the Dordogne area, specifically Sarlat. We are very interested in renting a kayak or canoe and going down the scenic river. We would arrive by train in Sarlat, but we would not have a car. Is there transportation between the villages along the river besides the boat?
I see there are tours, but what about hiring a driver?
Ideas and suggestions are welcome!

Tough one.
My only suggestion would be to try and organise with the canoe rental people for the dates and pickups that you will need.
I have done something similar when renting barges on French canals. The operators generally know someone who can do this for a fee.
September is a busy time so you would do well to try and organise this early.

Roger,
How can I find out when the musical festival is in Scarlat this year? I am planning on being there the first week in Sept. Also, can you recommend lodgings?
Thank you

Hi Roger,
Fête de la Musique: National music day on the 21st June every year throughout the medieval town
Enjoy

I would like to eat something simple, that is not part of various elaborately priced different menus.
I have not had a good meal in France since we left Barcelona. Everything in Sarlat seems either
boring or questionable. Almost ordered tripe by mistake at lunch today. Instead ended up
against my better instincts) ordering a "burger of the house." It was slavered with pickle relish,
which I cannot eat, and had an unmelted layer of cheese (horrible) with a slice of ham (I guess
this is supposed to substitute for bacon). I had to send it back to be actually cooked and it came
back with the meat edible, but I still had to scrape away pickle relish.
In other places we had had OK coq au vin, duck (not my favorite, but it seems omnipresent).
I just don't know what to order to eat a simple non-heavy, non-multiple course meal. I long
for Italy where eating well is easy.
