Lovely museum in a wonderful house

The house used to be a barn and has been converted into a house. It is quite idyllic with a garden behind and an outer staircase and a small inner court. It is a small museum but... read more

The village of Barbizon – 'le village des peintres' as it is called in French – is beautiful, but it is hard to get and from. And expensive because one needs to hire a taxi, unless one has one’s own transport. For this reason I give this village only three stars. The village is 61 kms (38 miles) from Paris;... More

The house used to be a barn and has been converted into a house. It is quite idyllic with a garden behind and an outer staircase and a small inner court. It is a small museum but tended to with loving care. The lady on duty told us about the Angelus and the story behind it. Near her desk is... More

A small museum housed in the former home of Francois Millet, the most famous artist of the Barbizon school. Known for the Angelus (de Millet). The exhibition is nothing special but it is interesting to see the actual place where Millet lived and worked.

This historical little house is run privately by an organization looking after the heritage of Millet. It is right in the center of the beautiful village of Barbizon and the entry is 5 €. On entry you get handed a leaflet with quite some information. Different languages are available. The 3 rooms are full of paintings from various artists and... More

We were a bit disappointed. Sure, the three rooms are crammed with paintings by a wide variety of artists, but there's little information given about Millet, his way of working, his life in Barbizon. We found the Millet house in the Cotentin much more atmospheric and informative, a few years ago.

This was the home of the Millets and the art studio for the famous painter. Right now it is a sort of museum/gallery and costs 5 euro to get in to see 3 rooms worth of painting and be able to buy actual art of the period. The sale collection goes for thousands of euro and the idea of paying... More

We visited Millet's Studio early one morning before a group arrived and what a wonder experience to wander around with no other people. The gentleman in charge was really informative explaining about the Studio and Millet to us which really made the visit special. As we left, the studio was busy but our visit for €5 was very good value... More

Filled with pieces from Millets original studio. Great information. A real treat to see where Millet worked. The town is beautiful and highly recommend a day trip or stay over night.

Barbizon is located at the Western entrance of Fontainebleau Forest. The village is the home of many European painters when this place was trendy. The Millet's residence is the place where the famous artist lived and painted. Now a small private museum, the place is worth visiting. One of the most amazing part of the studio is the comparison between... More
