The Abbaye aux Dames is today the musical hub of Saintes. It was the first convent in the Saintonge region. The nuns were powerful women, wearing crosses and striking coins. The influence of the abbey was vast. This is still true today thanks to its musical activities and its unique architectural heritage. The Notre Dames church is a pearl of Romanesque art. The portal is richly decorated. The bell tower, in the shape of a pine cone and covered in stone scales, can be visited. Why not follow the path to heaven, you'll find a panoramic view over the town of Saintes. Discover the convent building, from its chapter house to the nuns' private quarters.

Located a short walk up the road behind tourist office or you can drive as there's plenty of parking. You can obtain a dual access ticket with the amphitheatre which is good value at 22 euros for two and includes audio guides at both sites....More

We were there on a late afternoon after the rain. The church was completely empty but there was music, birds were chirping and the free parking in the back was a plus. Google the title for more on its history.

The site has undergone some needed preservation and that means that some of the stonework looks new but without the restoration there was a danger of serious damage to the structure, so THANK YOU to the conservationist in preserving a beautiful site for future generations....More

The outside of the church and former convent are definitely worth seeing. Inside the cathedral is very disappointing. It feels like some bad renovation took place especially the ceiling. Quite a let down when you think of the history of this place!

This old Abbey had many lives. There are some souvenirs of its glorious past including intricately sculpted entrances. But restorations have been so extensive that a lot of the medieval flavor is now lost.

Very interesting visit. The church was built for the convent so several unusual features of you know your architgecture and church history etc. There is a renowed music college/venue as part of the complex.

Beautiful architecture, peaceful place, the color of the stone makes the light pays with the lines of this strict building.
