We returned to the Castle Schoenberg for our tenth Anniversary. We stayed in the same room and the same time of year . The castle has undergone a lot of upgrades and modernization to their rooms . We loved our room (23) at the top...More
A beautiful castle overlooking the A
Rhine. Built in 1149 . Was changed and building took place throughout history. Today hosts a beautiful hotel and a small museum illustrating the issue of castles on Rhine.
Just submitted this under Castle Schönberg. See that review please. Since I am required to say more, this review will be credited. It is expensive, but worth it. We only spent one night here. The room was beautiful with a canopy bed, separate sitting area,...More
Schönburg castle was erected in the first half of the twelfth century and destroyed by the French army in 1689.
Partially reconstructed by the American Oakley Rhinelander between 1885 and 1901, at present the former stronghold houses a luxury hotel and restaurant.

This was our favorite place during our vacation! Attentive, gracious staff. Rooms with character. Beautiful location. Amazing views. Delicious food. Beautiful garden. Definitely plan on a taxi if arriving by train or boat.
If you've always fancied living in a castle, then this is the closest thing to actually experiencing that dream!!
Romantic, historical, well-preserved, tastefully modernised where needed (phones, electricity etc), with an overabundance of atmosphere and class, this is an amazing place to stay. Certainly not...More
We drone up to the top. It was charming and nice, but there is only a hotel in there and short walks. The castle is better admired from a distance. There is a small museu, and a shop with a very friendly owner. Very small...More

The castle can be reached via an asphalted road. No dangerous curbs or badly maintained paths. After all, it is a luxury hotel / restaurant :-) .
Happy travels !

The castle sits high atop a cliff overlooking Oberwesel, so its over a mile (2-3 km) with the last half all narrow mountain switch-backs. I suggest contacting the castle staff via the email provided on website, as they provide a tractor/cart to haul luggage, but the porter is very busy at peak check-in. They were very helpful with our reservations, and would likely know options for taxi or shuttle service. If you are staying overnight, room 24 I believe is the highest round tower room overlooking the river valley on wing serviced by elevator. We were in 35 as I recall, with 4 flights of stairs...but unbelievable panoramic views from the balcony.
