Martello towers, sometimes known simply as Martellos, are small defensive forts that were built across the British Empire during the 19th century and you can find one in Jharkhand too. Probably the most famous historical structure in small town of Pakur. The tower was built to fend of Santhal rebellion during 1857 by the British colonialists. An upright concrete tower-like architecture with a glass roof. Inside there is room for armed personnel to stand and fire at the Santhal rebales.

I visited Pakur specifically to see the so-called 'Martello Tower', supposedly built in 1856 at the end of the Santal rebellion. It's sort-of looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India, but the interpretative panel installed has been ripped off, so it's a bit hard to work out why it was built. It's quite hard to find, but the key is to get your driver (if you have a driver) to ask for the court - it's in a pretty neglected park (notionally dedicated to the heroes of the uprising) adjacent to the law courts, on the road out of town leading west to Litipara. If you know anything about the origins and history of this strange erection (thirty feet tall and twenty-feet across, with several stories of loop-holes and a large opening - perhaps for a small cannon? - please let me know.

Martello towers are small defensive forts has historical importance build during the 19th century. They stand up to 40 feet high. The round structure and thick walls of solid masonry made them resistant to cannon fire, while their height made them an ideal platform for a single heavy artillery piece. The colour of the tower is red and from their we can see the neighboring areas.

Not much a sight seeing actually. It was a red tower, not very tall, and a winding staircase all the way upto the tower top with small windows on the way. You can get a view of the adjoining areas from the tower top.

Perhaps one of the more famous historical structure of Pakur town, it was built (some claim within a night) to fend of Santhal rebellion during 1857 by the British colonialists. Not the best pieces of architecture though, it's a concrete upright tower with room for armed persoonel to stand and fire at the poor santhal peasants - which they successfully were able to subdue.
