The Ethnographic Park “Pirámides de Güímar” is a 64.000 m2 site of great cultural value, which comprises six stepped pyramids that have been studied by archaeologists around the world, led by the famous Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl. The park includes the Casa Chacona Museum, which shows the results of the investigations carried out in the pyramid complex, its astronomical alignment with the sun during the summer and winter solstices, and one of the largest photographic collections of stepped pyramids in the world. Visitors can also visit the Auditorium, showing a documentary about the pyramids and the research of Dr. Heyerdahl, the Expeditions room, with information and reproductions of the boats used by Heyerdahl in his transoceanic voyages, and a large-scale reproduction of the Ra II; and a leisure area with cafeteria, souvenir shop and playroom. Three outdoor routes can also be discovered along the more than 20.000 m2 of endemic Canarian gardens: the Botanical Route, the Exportation Products Route and the Cultural Route, which offers information on many aspects of culture, history and ethnography of the Canary Islands.Furthermore, two new exhibitions have been inaugurated recently. On one hand, the Ethnographic Park is housing the exhibition “Rapa Nui. Polynesia: Extreme Survival”, developed by the ‘Mata Ki Te Rangi’ Foundation of Easter Island. The exhibit aims to raise awareness of one of the most extraordinary societies in the world and the achievements of this statue-building Polynesian society. The latest novelty at the Park is the Secret Garden, a 1500 m2 garden specialised on poisonous plants, comprising a selection of over 70 plant species that have toxic or dangerous properties. This ‘live exhibit’, unique in the Canary Islands, reviews the exciting history of poisons, and presents stories of some of the most notorious poisoners and deadly venoms of all times.

We made a brief visit as we had some time before going to the airport and it was certainly interesting to see the pyramids and there was a lot of info on life in Tenerife in the past plus some Kontiki and other historical migrations based items. But pretty expensive even for the basic package (11.80) and a bit of... More

well off the beaten track, you sort of have to get lost to find it and then when you are there, you can't believe you actually are there! It is a very different place to the mass tourist places on Tenerife, but well worth a visit. Both of our visits have been in January, when it is quiet and cooler... More

The Parque Etnografico Piramides de Guimar is undoubtedly a fascinating place. It surrounds these misterious "mastaba"-shaped (stepped pyramids) constructions whose origin and function is still unclear, notwithstanding Thor Heyerdahl's studies. The Museum offers many very interesting findings and samples of the art, history and customs of the autoctone Guanches. It features a cinema room where you can see a short... More

We came across a leaflet almost by accident and went out of curiosity. It turned out to be much larger than we expected and we spent a very enjoyable three hours here(including around half an hour having lunch in the picnic area) - had we had the audio guide that is available, we would probably have been here longer! Not... More

Heard good things but it was a bit of a disappointment after a long up hill journey through town with poor signage and be honest the biggest and best pyramids can see from the road. I don't regret going but feel it would be wrong to recommend it. Bit on the pricey side for what you see

This is a purpose built visitor attraction with a very tenuous link to the area. The history is interesting but the place really is a triumph of hype over experience. As someone old enough to actually remember the events commemorated it really was disappointing to see the whole thing being over hyped. Also there were many unsubstantiated assumptions made about... Very deceptive from the outside but very interesting once inside. It challenges you to think about the movement of our ancestors.

The Pyramids aren't spectacular, but are very interesting in their own right. The museum is well laid out with interesting details of both the site and the relationship to other structures around the world. Excellent sections on Thor Heyerdahl, Easter Island, gardens on local flora and also one on poison plants.

Travelled to Guimar to see this attraction but felt 18 euros was expensive - especially when locals only paid 4 euros. An audio unit was an extra charge. Thought the links to Egypt and Easter Island were tenuous and decided not to pay the entry as we didn't think we'd get much for the money. Also though they were nothing... More
