Portsalon beach
Voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, now I know why.
I vacationed in the Fanad area for two weeks in July 2021.
The Portsalon/Magherawardan beach is clean and the local people take great pride and care of the area. They are proud to say it has been given the blue flag award on numerous occasions.
Donegal is known for breathtaking beaches and awesome golf courses.
If you are in the area try out Portsalon Golf club. They have one of the best golf courses I have played in a long time. The club members are very helpful and went above and beyond in every way to help make our experience memorable.

We had a great time and met a lot of wonderful people.

Safe travels no matter where you wander

Thank you from the USA

My husband, toddler, baby and I stopped here enroute back from a lovely trip to Fanad lighthouse. We picked up takeaway fish and chips from the Pier restaurant in Portsalon and brought them to eat at the main access point to the beach where public toilets including disability toilet, picnic table, bins and lifeguards are present. On an aside, I have never seen a completely sea rusted hand dryer in the ladies! There are two main other access points-by Portsalon pier and an unmarked layby at the foot of the hairpin mountain drive down marked by a few cars parked. There is a fabulous colour to the sand at this beach but very difficult to push a buggy. We stopped at the viewpoint overlooking Ballymastocker strand/Portsalon beach from the mountain top: well worth it. I got for a solo walk along the beach and had to dodge the jellyfish. It is a vast beach enjoyed by walkers, dogwalkers, swimmers, families, paddlers and kiteflyers alike. When we were leaving a mobile chippie had opened in the carpark.
Portsalon is one of 12 Blueflag beaches in Donegal and numerous other memorable ones. Unbeatable? That is debatable but I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and will return.

Portsalon Beach, also known as Ballymastoker Beach is an absolute wonder & probably one of the best beaches anywhere! The lovely golden sands are typical of the many stunning beaches that meet the Atlantic on the majestic coastline of Co. Donegal. It's pristinely clean, surrounded by unspoilt countryside & is located on the north eastern side of Fanad Peninsula. As you approach the beach from Rathmullan there are fabulous views overlooking the entire beach. These beaches are fantastic for walking but best when the tide is out as they treble their width. An absolute must see!

The sheer space of Portsalon beach is fantastic. There are public toilets at the top of the beach near to the Rathmullen end. There are always food and ice cream vans available in the Summer time.
At the village of Portsalon end there is a restuarant and bar plus the Golf Club also does food.
Car parking may be a problem on hot days so come early. There is a brand new car park and recycle facility near the golf club. The length of the beach ensures that there is never any worry about social distancing.
The water is crystal clear and lifeguards are on duty during the summer season. Enjoy as it is also free to enter.

Beautiful beach with flat golden sand for miles. Also worth driving up to the Ballymastocker Bay viewing point to see the beaches from above. There is a toilet block in the beach carpark with wheelchair access.

Amazing beach 4 days in a row! The kids loved it, building sandcastles with moates, collecting hermit crabs of all sizes and releasing them back into the wild, sea swimming and body boarding and the adults loved it for a bit of sea swimming and a bit of snorkeling!
