It is a little bit out of the way either driving from Ottawa or from Montreal, but if you are in the area you should pay a visit. The cost is cheap and the guided tour is great. You get a lot of information regarding this only french language prison in Ontario. The visit includes cells, isolation cells and much... More

From 1825-1998 this jail was in operation as the only Francophone correctional centre in Ontario. The tour lasts between 30-45 minutes, you are taken through the intake process, the visitor room, viewing of the solitary confinement cell, the cell for women which was later changed to a protective custody cell for males, cell block 1, the exercise yards, classroom and... This small museum gives history of not only the prison and courthouse, but culture and life in general, putting broader historical moments into context with a view of local and regular people. Good value and great for a short activity for people of all ages. Many artifacts on display. Offers guided or self-guided touring.

Great museum to visit if travelling through hawksbury in a little town just west called L'Orignal. Kids had alot of questions as this jail was different than the ones they visited before like in Cornwall and Kingston. We wont give it away but if you are interested in Ontario history and jails this is one you must visit. Very kid... More

A piece of History but, a necessity just the same in a rural community. Well restored with some interesting tid bits about people who once occupied the cells.Interesting to see where the old gallows were, the small cells and where the prisnors ate. Still local people around who remember stories of this jail.

The guide conceded and did the tour in English...if you have set tour times..they... More

Our guide took us through this prison which was the oldest in Ontario and the second oldest in Canada (Trois-Rivieres has the oldest). Having never visited such a facility, we were totally fascinated by life in a prison. Closed in 1998, it's inmates were then sent elsewhere, several of them to Ottawa. You will also learn if any of their... More

It seems not that long ago, (early 1990's) that this facility, which I believe was the oldest operating prison in Ontario, was home to numerous provincial offenders. I remember in 1993, (I was part time Registrar for the criminal court of Ontario) reading court decisions to prisoners in this facility. Now it has become the top tourist attraction in this... More

I don't know if this qualifies as a review, but I suppose all experiences are valued by potential visitors! The prison's website said opening hours were from 10am-4pm daily. When we arrived (from Quebec) at 1:30pm, we found the doors locked. We were extremely disappointed to find out (the next day by telephone) that they only open sporadically. The Thursday... More
