We were in The Vendee, France. We took the train from Mortagne-Sur-Sevre which goes to Les Herbiers and back with various points of interest on the way. You travel in a carriage that was once part of the Orient Express. It stops midway and you are served stunning food whilst looking at beautiful countryside. This is a great way to... More

The event is run by passionate enthusiasts who just love their steam train . We stopped 3 times to hear the jazz on the platform, at Lisburn and Portadown. Couples are jiving and having a great time. It's just like going to dinner with friends for a good old chat but you're on a steam train, you're allowed alcohol (... More

Lovely wee gem of an attraction. My wee man is a Thomas enthusiast and getting a ride on a working authentic steam train was awesome. Even more so that its in whitehead so we had a lovely day going for lunch then a walk at the shore. The staff are truly enthusiastic about their role it was a wonderful trip.

The people at RPSI have put a steam train back together that hasn't run since the 1960s. That is an astonishing feat. Rides were on offer at Whitehead's summer festival, and I took one. For a paltry £2.50 you get to go back and forth four times from the old-style replica station house to King's Bridge. Sure, this is just... More

Merlin is a wonderful big blue steam train. Richard, my buddy at art class painted it. She was out doing the Easter Eggspress rides on the day of the famous Whitehead Road Race, the oldest running race in Ireland. The sun was shining, and the steam train was very good and didn't blow smoke all over the bridge where the... More

This was so much fun. They have a great railway yard called Whitehead Excursion station full of cranes and engines. The ticket to ride in a steam train was £2.50. Parents were everywhere telling toddlers it was a “choo-choo”. I couldn’t help but laugh. I guess they all watch Thomas the Tank engine. I asked the staff and was told... More

I have read the comments below and feel genuinely sorry for the lady who had the problems, but, running steam on a modern railway is complex and steam has to fit around the main services, so it is sometimes held up while the railway deals with its core activity, and must then clear off out of the way to leave... The steam train rides really bring back so many memories. It is funny to see those awful old doors on the train carriages. They were so difficult to get open! For these steam train rides you have a conductor who opens them for you, thankfully. When I lived overlooking the railway line in Carrickfergus and had children visiting they always... More

Great day at the Whitehead Festival. Merlin, a huge beautiful blue steam train was offering short rides back and forth from Whitehead Excursion station. That new building is great fun, built in the style of the old station houses, too many of which have been demolished over the years. There's a little arched window where you buy your ticket. The...
