So special to be staying in an old and original longhouse in Sarawak. The area of Bario os truely wonderful. We enjoyed our three days here at this amazing longhouse.Jane cared for us very well and the food was based on the local produce- great experience.

This is a homestay in a native communal longhouse. My host Jane treated me as if I was family with three homemade meals each day! Had to opportunity to socialise with other families in the longhouse in the evening. What a friendly place where stangers will stop to waive or say hello without fail!

Enjoyed every moment at Bario up to its bits (although our internet access was limited). We spent most of our time with the community as they are very friendly and hospitable

Walk down from Ngimat Ayu Homestay for 10 minutes you can find Bario Asal Longhouse!
Met by Uncle Panai who brought us for a tour and introduction to all the past and present famous people who were and are from the long house.
The tour began with the kitchen with the fantastic fire place for either cook or just to warm oneself on a cold night, and ended on the ceremonial corridor, where you find photos of the founders and famous people that came from Bario Asal! Should not miss this chance will in Bario and a must thing to do.

Bario Asal is a very rustic longhouse with many quaint nooks and corners. There is a very quaint old fireplace in the central long verandah where kettles of water are boiled , and rows of old fascinating photographs of families hang on the walls of the longhouse. An experience visiting it and well worth the visit.

A 'must go' to place at least once in your lifetime. Also to experience the peace and quiet of life without internet.

I had a wonderful experience at this homestay and highly recommend everyone to visit! I learned a lot about Bario and the traditional Kelabit way of life while enjoying fresh and delicious food and excellent company. Bario is a beautiful place not to be missed! Free Turo!

Though there's 3 ways of reaching Bario, flying (on board a 19 seater Twin-otter plane) is the fastest way of reaching Bario.
Bario Asal Longhouse is the oldest, most traditional Kelabit longhouse standing. This longhouse was built on the runway of Bario's 2nd airport in the 1950/60's to replace the old longhouse.
Over the years, The longhouse have move forward with time. We now see modern electrical appliances, modern kitchen etc.
One may engage the locals for a tour of the longhouse (with the fee of RM30 for the 1st person and RM5 per person for subsequent participant)
The weather is cool all year long due to its high altitude. On a clear night, one is able to see the milky way. Awesomely beautiful sight.
Bario is powered by a mini hydro dam. A tour the the dam can also be arranged (with the fee of RM30 for the 1st person and RM5 per person for subsequent participant).

The Bario Asal longhouse is the oldest longhouse. From the outside it looks slightly shabby, but maintainance work is being done in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the Bario Food Festival.

Be sure the check out all the photos in the longhouse. You can get a local woman community guide to take you on a tour of the longhouse for RM30 for the 1st pax, and RM5 for each additional pax. 2015 prices. It's very worth as they will tell you stories of each family, and the history of the longhouse.

Bario is in the middle of Borneo. Getting there is quite an adventure, in that small plane (the otter, they call it) that you wonder if it would even take off...but it sure does and, arriving to Bario is like going 70 years back in time. The way of living, the people..all seems from an old movie, is really authentic, worth a visit.
They only have one pub (bar?) and woman don't go there (even though it's just a simple varanda with a couple of chairs over a small pond) because "people could talk", so, only man attend the pub, and go there for a soda (but it's a warm soda, since the fridge won't work). The place is paceful, the people kind, the food amazing, the jungle demanding...so, even though there aren't many amenities, there is sure plenty things to do, and guides willing to go with you to do the Bario Loop, or climb the Prayer Mountain, visit the Longhouses, go to the "market" on sunday....go to the salt mill, yes, salt!!! in the middle of the mountains they produce a salt low in sodium so, pretty healthy. Just go there before too many tourist do and ruin the place. So cool.
