We were told to visit these forts by a lady in the hostel in Portmacgee..wow they were fantastic. A mini-Newgrange, they are beautifully maintained, with a just enough detail in the archaeology information for myself & my family. They should not be missed ..

There are a lot of ring forts in various states of disrepair around the Ring of Kerry but this one is particularly striking. When I visited, I was totally alone and had a wonderful time climbing the walls and listening to the wind. It's a little bit of a walk from the parking lot but don't be deterred; you'll be... More

Only a short drive from Cahersiveen, this fort is a must, once you drive there it's only a short walk from the carpark,to get the full history Jodie at the Barracks really enlightened us with its story.

We went to the fort at night. Rainy and lit only by our torches, visiting the fort this way was like stepping back through the centuries!

The ring forts of Ireland are so incredibly cool, provided you know a little history. Heck, even if you don't, they're still awesome. The best thing about spending time at the forts is that they're not packed with tour bus-riding folks. Pack your camera, don your trekking shoes, and watch your step in the rain!

An incredibly preserved stone fort. There is excellent signage telling the history of the place, and you can walk all around and over the walls.

Having explored Ireland and Scotland a few times, we were quite familiar with ring forts. This one, however, was the first one we had seen where the structure of the fort had been fully restored so you could truly sense what it would have been like inside. The walls had built in stairs so you could climb up to the... More

Our guide insisted that we would be very impressed, and he was absolutely right. A few hundred meters from Ballycarbery Castle is the stone fort of Cahergalbuilt around 600AD. The current structure has undergone some reconstruction and our guide said that some people complained that it looks too “clean and pure”. Maybe so, but the stone work is excellent --... More
