Running the first telegraph cable from Ireland to America took a lot of effort, and created many milestones. As such there are many historic buildings here, but almost all are now residential properties, if not guest houses or hotels. As such there isn't anywhere to go and see all of the history in one place, except at the Skellig Gift... More

Imagine the vision to think of laying a cable across the Atlantic ocean to America in the mid 1800's. It started here. Wow is all I can say.

This is a really great place to start when you want to investigate the link with Waterville and the history of the Telegraph and the Commercial Cable Company. Excellent piece of history and knowledge.

If you do a search in Trip Advisor for The Story of the Trans Atlantic Cable Station you'll get great info. Trip Advisor has the Cable Station written out three different ways and NOT all in the same category so it's a bit confusing.

Imagine having the audacity, vision and courage to even conceive of laying a communications cable across the floor of the north Atlantic in the mid-1800's. Visit this site and briefly consider the magnitude of the achievement and persistence of the people who successfully (after several attempts) connected the continents. Truly amazing.
