Newtown Castle is a beautifully restored 16th century cylindrical fortified tower house - one of only few such buildings in Ireland. Having lain derelict for many years, the castle's restoration began in 1994, completed in time for the opening of the Burren College of Art in August of that year. Newtown Castle is once again a vibrant building in daily use, central to the artistic, cultural and educational life of the Burren. It is open free of charge to the public on week days. Newtown Castle is also available for wedding ceremonies, small private functions or company events.

Before heading over to Ireland, we researched things we might want to see along our exploring routes. Castles, Abbeys & Friaries were always considered. If they were off the beaten path, or presented a challenge to find, then that almost guaranteed they would be included...More

Just off of the N67 and north of Corkscrew Hill is a unique tower house (which is saying a great deal since there are over 3000 tower houses in Ireland) at the foot of a grand hill in the Burren. Not only is Newtown Castle...More

Lovely castle/tower to explore. If you are looking for a fairly quick up close view of a castle/tower - this is a great stop. Honor system for donations. You can walk through the entire structure (4 floors). Great find!

A short walk from our guesthouse. Made our own way in and up the stairs. Nice to see the honesty system still applies and works. Allowed a real feel for life in times past.

Hello, My name is Francis Crofford. I am planning on being in Ballyvaughan in June and I am trying to reconnect with my Irish Family. My brother Art visited there a few years back with his wife Christine and daughter Kim and found that Betty and Piece McNamara were our relations thru my grandmother Susan Vaughan. The McNamara's children Mary and Gerald had visited my family in New Jersey, USA in the 1980's. I had a number for them but when I tried to call it, it was disconnected. I fear there may be bad news there. Anyway I would I am asking a huge favor. I know that Ballyvaughan is a small town and I am hoping that one of your employees may know the McNamars and will be able to supply me some contact information. I have a tentative reservation at the Arches B&B from June 18th thru the 26th. I would love to meet my Irish family. My cell phone in the USA is 727-452-1990. Your help in this matter would be much appreciated. Sincerely, Francis Crofford
