About
Last entry 3.30pm. Bothwell Castle is the largest and finest 13th century stone castle in Scotland, much fought over during the Wars of Independence. Located in a beautiful setting overlooking the River Clyde, part of the original circular keep of Bothwell Castle survives. Find out about medieval Scotland by exploring the 13th century prison tower and the 14th century great hall and chapel.

Beautiful ruins however very let down by — no picnic tables — broken fence around castle grounds — overflowing and not enough bins— protocabin at main entrance and works building area to left of building — scaffolding all around back of castle—- opening times on website not correct. Feels like it needs to have a little TLC to the area outside of castle. However very worthwhile and enjoyable visit. The dog walkers are very helpful with information and directions for the beautiful walks along the banks of the river Clyde. Little shop in castle and toilets very nice and lady who works there very helpful. Worth the visit.

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to leave us a review. There are areas of the castle currently closed to allow for conservation works to take place, and the admission prices have been reduced to reflect this while it continues. We apologise that there is some disruption to the visitor experience during this time, but pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit. We have ensured that the opening times are correct on our website. Thanks again.

We saw Bothwell one the last day of our vacation. Two weeks of touring Castles, churches, cathedrals and abbeys. Perhaps if it had been on the first day we would have been more impressed. While it does have some interesting architectural features, it was not a great castle. It was under substantial repairs at the time we went and there is little to explore. We were in and back out again in about 30 minutes.
If you are in the area and have the time, stop by for a look but, I would not make it a destination.

This is an impressive and huge castle ruin.
A friendly staff member gave us information that made our visit more enjoyable.
My grandchildren had a great time with the quiz sheet.
A wedding party was in progress that added a special touch to our visit.
Take a bit of time and absorb the history of this great ruin.

The ruined castle sits close to the town of Bothwell and is surrounded by woodland walks along the banks of the river Clyde,on a sunny day people lounge about on the grassy knolls surrounding the castle.Ruined it may be but an interesting feature to admire.Close by are shops where you could pick up a picnic if the weather allows.

First time visiting the castle/ruins. It was only a few pounds - I took a piccy of the price list. There are two bits we were able to get in to, one you go through a door and can get a wee mooch inside. The other part you climb up the stairs and can look out across the rest of it.
Parts were fenced off due to debris falling, not sure if that has always been the case or if you were able to explore more.
It was the quickest visit inside ruins we have had but I love a bit of history and ruins and for £3 it was 100 percent worth a visit! There is also loads of the surrounding area you can take nice walks and more than a few took their dogs there too.

Spent an hour wandering around Bothwell Castle . Cost £2.40 to see inside the ruins. Well worth the money spent. Lots of information provided about the history of the castle with lots of plaques and storyboards. Grounds beautifully maintained.

Scaffolding outside for many months with n sign of restoration.
To pay admission is understandable but not for a 10 min visit as was nothing to see that you can't from the entrance.

Maybe because parts are closed off for repairs, but a bit disappointing. Reckon you can see it all in 15 minutes. It has an interesting history but not really worth the detour.

We went after hours and there wasn't much to see. This was a castle you have to pay to get in to, so I am glad we just went when it was closed. We walked around the outside, and then left.

That would depend on where you are

Would you beable to get married by a Scottish humanist society celebrant here in the grounds somewhere? And take some wedding photos the wedding party is only 4 people plus the celebrant who performs the marriage and a photographer it would be very subtle and would not disturb anyone else's day

You might check with the Castle where you buy the tickets. I think they would be able to answer that.

Can you visit the cafe without paying to go into the castle
Written 8 May 2017
I am afraid this site does not have a café only a small shop/ticket office that sells refreshments including coffee and soft drinks as well as various other items.
