Built from the 16th century by the seigneurial family Les Gouffiers, the Château d'Oiron today houses the contemporary art collection Curios & Mirabilia, loosely based on the theme of the curiosity cabinet in reference to the fabulous art collection of Claude Gouffier, master of King Henry II of France's stables. Artists reinterpret an exceptional place and original décor - galleries of Renaissance wall paintings in the School of Fontainebleau style, painted panelling and carved woodwork from the 17th century. Visitors are invited to explore "curiosities" and "marvels" following in the footsteps of the Marquis de Carabas - or Puss in Boots, who, it is said, was based on Claude Gouffier. FROM 1ST JUNE TO 30 SEPTEMBER Open every day 10.30-18.30 FROM 1ST OCTOBER TO 31 MAYOpen every day 10.30-17.30 N.B Last admission to the ticket office 1h before closing time. CLOSING DAYS 1 January, 1 May, 1 & 11 November and 25 December

The Chateau is a most beautiful setting for this collection of contemporary art. It's a place of great contrasts, old and new, different qualities of light. Allow yourself at least a couple of hours to explore the warren of rooms, corridors and towers and prepare to be challenged, inspired, amused. An explanatory leaflet helps guide you through the 35 rooms... More

A magnificent building externally. We were quite amazed that nobody had ever lived in this château. We visited the place on a Sunday as not much is normally open. The château turned out to house both modern and experimental humanist artwork. Overall the place was worth the visit. However some of the 'gruesome' artwork may not be to some people's... More

The exhibition inside is unusual (Modern Art) and is not related to the history of the building. Be prepared for a shock. Intriguing but not to everyone's taste.

I first visited this museum of quirky modern art on a stormy day and walking into the room of beehive statues with the constant hum of bees in the background to the sound of thunder outside was a sensory explosion which the artist could not have anticipated. What a wonderful place. My family visit every time we are in the... More

Dear le1retail, first of all we want to thank you for your comment and your frequent visits of the castle! Indeed sometimes the natural events like winds, sun, storm come to create a magical atmosphere!! To answer to your question : the artwork you saw with the two skeletons are not dinosaurs ;) but dromedaries!! Since your visit, we offer... More

No senior discount again, though at 7-50 euros there is not really a lot to see. Kitchen, dining room, lounge area and staircase are the most that will be shown to you. All delightfully furnished and interesting, resplendent copper cooking pans in the kitchen and very full table settings for diners. Seems the place is privately owned and used as... More

Dear Christopher, it seems you are not talking about the castle? we don't have resplendent copper cooking pans.... no ramparts....and the castle is not a private place but belongs to France with a national collection of art.... so nobody "lives" inside the castle but all of our spaces are open for the visitors to discover the monument and the contemporary... The grand chateau, originally of the 15th century now houses a collection of modern art that is to harken back to the days when people began to explore the world and return with what was considered strange, shocking and exotic things or animals. The art may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the setting is unique and the countryside... More

This is so different from what you expect. A beautiful building with extremely quirky 'art' within. We visited twice last year and will be going again this year as we now live in the area and cannot resist taking visitors. It would have been nice to see some original furnishings, but they are long gone. Hence the imaginative use of... More

A quite stunning (rural) setting for this unusually playful, adventurous building with reminders of Ludwigs fanciful romantic castles in Germany though less ornate and showy . If you like contemporary Art there is the added bonus of some stunning installations throughout the Chateau and grounds . On one level, the art on display achieved its objective of creating a reaction, but at the expense of the environment in which it is viewed. We left not knowing much about the building and its occupants over the years. The leaflet is helpful to a point, but the overall experience left us cold. On the one hand, bravo for... More

Even the Tweens with us were blown away by the quirky art eg the dripping tree, the walking dinosaurs, the face plates. Quiet and so tasteful but fun also. Nice gift shop but no food or drinks available so beware!
