This was an afternoon trip sponsored by La Mariposa Spanish School. We paid a nominal entry fee and had the benefit of a guide who pointed out the various flora, and trees. The big attraction was the canyon area where there was a tall waterfall next to the canyon wall which was riddled with holes and crevices. Hundreds of parrots... More

They offer a nice, almost flat, and doable guided (C$ 90 pp) walk trough a dry tropical forest to the waterfall where special small Parrots nest and live in the rock cliffs. If you really want to see them, bring binoculars and a telezoomlens for you camera. It is ok, but the road to get there is really long and... More

We came for a mission trip and had a free day to tour the beautiful areas of Ticuantepe (Near Managua). We stayed at the Pinas de Paz (a Pineapple Farm in Ticuantepe) and the drive was long and bumpy to get there...but so worth it!!! The park reminds me of Jurasic Park...everything is amazing! The trees are so cool. The... More

After a ride down a long road, we arrived at the visitor center. The staff was helpful and there was good information at the center. Buy a map there for only 25 cords. The trails are well maintained and easy to navigate. Saw some cool trees and plants. Lots of birds could be heard and a few seen. We heard... More

We enjoyed the chocoyero, the cliff full of nest-holes of cute little green parrots. Getting there was an easy walk from the reception area. We were serenaded (or yelled at) by howler monkeys all the way to the cliff! We also wanted to do a longer & a bit harder hike. So, we selected a 3- hour hike and met... More

We did Chocoyero on Aug 19 2012, thought I would throw down a few (maybe) helpful items. • 45 minutes from Stop & Go on Masaya highway (which is 8.5 km Masaya Highway) Lady on phone stated 2 hours, maybe if one lived by the airport and traveled during rush hour!!! • 4x4 not always called for, just a vehicle... We have gone to El Chocoyero-El Brujo park on 3 occasions and have had pleasant experiences every time. The park is a bit difficult to get to but it is well worth the effort; especially if you are a nature lover or need a good hike after being cooped up in Nicaraguan buses. El Chocoyero's isolated location is a perfect... More

Cool place for sure. Maybe it seemed cooler becuase we were in Managua for a long time doing spanish school, but overall, compared to all the hikes we've done in nicargua, this one was one of my favorites. I recomend driving up in a moto-taxi to enhance the experience. We made a little video of our day trip. Check it... More

Getting to the Refugio is a bit of a haul on some rugged dirt roads. The drive is worth it. It takes you through some great towns (where you can buy fresh pineapples from the local children), make sure you follow the signs. If you do not have a four wheel drive vehicle, there are small taxis that you can... More
