Ingenious ... that is the word that immediately came to mind when visiting the oldest still functioning planetarium in the world! It is certainly impressive what Eise Eisinga did in the late 1800’s: for 7 years he created this planetarium in his living room (so...More

Eise Eisinga had to be a genius on the order of Leonardo Da Vinci. The mathematics to assemble this still working planetarium is beyond my comprehension.

This accurately moving model of the solar system was built between 1774 and 1781 by Eise Eisinga, a wool carder. A true very old but stil functional science place for all ages. Really amazing technology.

Very interesting and very friendly people that tells the story of Eise. It's really worth to visit. The museum shows more about the Universum, starts, planets etc... but the visit only in his room where he build the planetarium is amazing!!

Well worth coming to Franeker for, if you are in the area. A wool comber (i.e. cleaning, combing and dying wool so it is ready for spinning) made this planetarium in 7 years of his free time, finishing in 1781. Everything is hand made, from...More
