Putting religion to the side, this is a great place to visit at any time of the year. A chance to look back, look forward and perhaps find your self. A supper little cafe and a shop full of bits to suit all walks of life. Try and meet a Monk!

Friday 26 July 19, After visiting Downside Abbey, my husband and I went for refreshments at the Downside Abbey Visitor Centre.
The Ladies there gave us a very warm welcome. My husband had a pot of tea and I had a cup of coffee and we both had a large slice of cinnamon cake baked by the local ladies of the village.
We did not have to pay for the refreshments, but we donated five pounds to a local cause run by the abbey. My husband and I also purchased a guide book on the history of the abbey.
This is a place worth visiting after you have looked round the magnificent Downside Abbey.

The church seemed dull and lifeless but then it was a dull day. One cannot visit a place like this without thinking about abuse - and yes - they have set up an independent inquiry. But the school looks well resourced and the nice lady in the visitor centre was charming. No charge for the tea and cake "but you might like to make a donation", and we did

Downside Abbey is off the beaten track but is worth every footstep to experience the beauty of the best neo-Gothic abbey in England. The grounds are beautiful and the buildings surrounding the Church and the School are fascinating. A living monument to the vitality of Catholicism after the French Revolution and the return of Benedictines to Britain. The community is small but welcoming and the atmosphere is tranquil. A place to find peace and solitude just a few miles from Bath and Bristol. Wonderful.
