The monastery is the richest and largest monastic institution in Ladakh. This monastery houses a treasure of valuable and historical cultural & religous artifacts including images, scriptures and art work.

This place is nestled within the Himalayas. We were lucky to be there during Hemis festival. It was great to enjoy the dances and celebrations during that time.

Nothing spectacular about it. Thicksey was much better. If you visit Thicksey you can definitely give skip to this one

Located 45km from Leh it is is built on a mountain on the west bank of the Indus River. There are copper gilded statues of Buddha and Guru Rimpoche. Much of the monastery needs to be maintained better.

The museum is excellent. The main halls, the wall murals and the monk dances (They were practising for the festival on june 23-24) are absolutely fantastic. Warm hearted place with vast banks of knowledge.
