I'm born at this lake but moved away around 20 years ago. I still love to visit my hometown with the lake. Very clean water, a little bit cold but this is something you get used to it. Also the cruises offered on the lake are really nice.

A beautiful lake resort in Upper Austria. The lake and the surrounding mountains leave you breathless and exhilarated, a wonderful break from the hustle and bustle of Vienna. The place is so quiet and laid back and the water is crystal clear. Lots of restaurants and hotels that provide magnificent views. Around two hours by car from Vienna. Ideal for... More

if we had anywhere like this in the UK you would never get me out of the water. Sadly i think my only option is to move to Austria (although not that sad as this place is fantastic!) the lake is crystal clear, the mountains are impressive, there's adequate reasonably priced parking, jetties, boats, swimmers, picnicing, and everywhere is clean... A long promenade to stroll and take in the beauty of the lake Traunsee and the surrounding mountains. Plenty of restaurants and coffee shops nearby. Don't forget to look for Schlafende Griechin, the Sleeping Greek Lady, whose profile one can see in the mountains!

We were on a cycling holiday and cycled down into Altmunster, just south of Gmunden. Wow - how breathtaking this lake was, particularly with the church of Traunkirchen in the background. It's a lovely place to stroll along.

The view south from Gmunden, across the lake to Traunstein, is a picture perfect look at the Austrian alps.

If it's cloudy there is not much to do and also the view is not so nice as it should be. The ferry was not working, there was only one restaurant open. They have very good deserts and beer.

The Traunsee combines easy accessability and infrastructure (via the nearby city of Gmunden) and is one of the most scenic places in Austria, with a wonderful view on the mountains. It has everything that a tourist destination would need, including hotels of different price levels and many opportunities for activities, even at bad weather. Sunshine of course means an obligatory... More

Being in Gmunden, Traunsee becomes the obvious attraction to see. The scenery is nice and beautiful. However, I preferred the lake in Hallstatt and Achensee to it. I guess the lakes in Tirol tend to be more glacial than the ones in the eastern parts of Austria.
