Fantastic views can be had on a clear day, you can drive almost to the top of the hill but a steep short walk follows. You are able to walk some parts of the walls but take care there are no handrails. The castle did have its own cistern for water. The Moslem, fortress was built in the 10th century... More

This fortress was built in the Xth c. by the Emir of Cordoba, to control the area of the Douro Valley. It is well preserved and offers a spectacular view of the region. It'd be worth a visit even without the castle. Sounds daft but true. The castle is on top of a hill, in fact it covers the top of the hill and offers magnificent views for tens of miles in all directions.
