You have to carry your shoes in a bag!!! Yupp, you need to take off your shoes at the entrance then you’d be given a plastic bag for your shoes. You will get to wear your shoes once you covered the first floor, before you crossed to the other building. The museum is great. Good maintenance. Nice showcases. Great collection.

The Sultan Abu Bakar Museum is situated right in the middle of Pekan, facing a river.

The lawn fronting the museum was impeccably kept and well maintained. There’s an aircraft, a war tank and helicopter on display at one end of the field, while in the middle of the field, there’s some abstract form of horses skillfully made of wood being display.

The white building housing the museum was imposing and majestic, with a distinctive colonial design and British architectural.

An entrance fee of RM 5 was imposed on local visitors, and the fully air-conditioned halls display a rich heritage and history of the Pahang sultanate on the ground floor and upper floor of the main building. Another hall on the left of the main building displays the history, culture, belief and customs of the aborigine tribes.

Another section behind the main building displays the history and items of the Malay Performing Arts such as the Makyong, Main Petri and Thai-influenced Menora , while another room next to this displays ceramic bowls and plates from the past, ranging from the Chinese Ming Dynasty to others.

A visit to this Museum was thus interesting and educating, and it’s well worth the nominal entrance fee.

Growing up in Pahang I have never known this state to have a museum that's with while visiting until this little gem had an upgrade and reopened its doors. The building has been beautifully restored and hopefully it will be well maintained. There are several rooms housing photos and artifacts from the state royal family. Other rooms cover a range of other subjects including traditional games, chins/porcelain, orang asli(native people), Islamic art, etc. The displays are all in good condition and there are a few interactive booths. I particularly enjoyed the one where you can play the different sounds of traditional musical instruments. There is a cafe called Kafe Belibis which serves traditional local Pahang dishes like ikan sungai gulai tempoyak, patin bakar pais and daging ketuk. Unfortunately we got there late and did not have the opportunity to sample any of these. The museum is closed on Mondays and on Hari Rayas.

Unfortunately the museum and the grounds are still closed for public. We could only drive to the entrance, have a glimpsed of vast and nicely manicured garden... and that's it!

Museum Sultan Abu Bakar is located at Pekan, Pahang. It's very exciting and informative place to visit with nice surrounding. The landscape is a good spot to take beautiful photos with wood sculpture animals and lush garden.

Entrance to the Sultan Abu Bakar Museum is free from now until 31 June 2016 but there is a catch. Only one gallery is open for the public. They have four galleries, three of which are closed temporarily. The first gallery contains posters tracing the history of Pahang. Second gallery consist of artifacts belong to Orang Asli of Pahang., depicting their culture, traditional music, bamboo blow pipes with poison darts, traditional medicine and articles used to perform rituals to chase away evil spirits. The third gallery contains clothes belonging to the late Sultan of Pahang, His Royal Highness Sir Sultan Abu Bakar. There are Keris, which is a Jagged knife, used by malay warriors and by the Sultan as part of the royal regalia. Items used during installation of the Sultan are also displayed here. Gallery four which is the only one open now consists of artifacts from the east coast states of Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan. There are posters of Wayang Kulit which is a puppet show that originated in Kelantan, and posters and cut out figures of a traditional Pahang dance called Mak Yong. Outside the museum are statues of horses, elephants and birds made from drift wood, which is popular with children and photographers. These were imported from Indonesia. This July I heard they are going to open a new gallery at the nearby Sultan Abdullah mosque which was constructed in Moorish style in 1928, to house 1001 inventions of the Islamic civilization ranging from cameras to chess boards that were used in the Muslim world long before they made their advent in the west. I was told that the entrance fee will be Rm 15 for tourists, Rm 4 for Pahang residents and Rm 5 for other state residents. It is better if they can make it Rm 4 for everyone including tourists to encourage more visitors.

It was constructed in the late 1920s by the British Government. During its 124 years of existance, the building was used in various ways, as the official residence of a British Resident during colonial Malaya, an army barracks by the invading Japanese army during WW2, and also as the official palace of Sultan Abu Bakar. It also houses a large collection of ancient Chinese glass-wares and ceramics previously used by former sultans of Pahang.

It was a really pleasant surprise to see this museum in Pekan.
We entered because we were interested in learning more about the sultans life, but we got much more.
First of all the museum is a beautiful restored colonial building which has really well been tranformed in a museum.
The museum itself has a nice display about the sultan´s life and history of Pahang.
But there is also a wing with the history and items related to the orang asli, and a wing about artistic Malysia and it´s history.
Everything is very well displayed and explained in Malay and English, and there are some fun interactif parts as well.
We really had a learnful and nice 2 hours in the museum.

Would definitely recommend it to anyone.

One of the best museums I've visited in malaysia. The place is well maintained and offers a good glimpse about the state's history and culture. Well worth a visit when you are in the area.

Very nice scenery of outdoor especially all the way in front of the museum, green field, blue sky and unique statues created from wood and classical military vehicles.
The indoor place is under construction and only allowed to enter in two areas for the time being.
