we got there by one of the local diving bases, with several larger boats. the place is closed, it's a military site. you can not land. we dove during day and night, but unfortunately there was a storm, so visibility was 0. 80% of the passengers got really sick due to sea sickness. so if you are not sure, don't board a boat. the drive there can be long and there will be waves! we stayed overnight on the boat, and the weather was terrible.

Initially I found the 2.5hrs to get to the National Marine Park a bit too long, but once in the water, the enormous amount of fish of any kind was almost overwhelming, but certainly uniquely amazing!

The visit to one of the islands by some incredibly knowledgeable (and hot :) Brazilian biologists from the Brazilian Environmental Research Institute (ICMBio) was very informative and a great plus to it all.

I took Horizonte Aberto tours there and the crew was very attentive and mindful of the marine life and guests, even helping me immediately after a small coral cut I myself had not noticed.

Finally, I learnt that Humpback whales come there from Antartica in July/August to have and nurture their babies so I am planning to come back soon.

The archipelago of Abrolhos is a great treasure of biodiversity in Brazil . Where I could admire countless species of marine fauna and flora, especially the giant humpback whales that tourists can admire up close. And this is fantastic and unforgettable.

There are many reasons to overcome the logistical challenge of reaching Caravelas, the sleepy colonial town in Southern Bahia, and taking the boat trip to Abrolhos - diving is amazing, especially the endemic coral species and the towering coral formations called Chapeirões; spending a night aboard a dive boat anchored among the islands, watching the myriad stars and listening to the seabirds; or watching the hundreds of hmpback whales which congreate there between July and October. The Horizonte Aberto catamaran is one of the best options to dive the Park and see the whales. All in all as I said it's worth the trouble of getting there.
