Its lovely to walk around the old vesting.
Walking on the walls gives you a stunning view over the whole place both inside and outside of the vesting.

Its history is amazing and walking around the small streets will make you go back into time.

During summer its even more gogeaus because of all the flowers and roses you can see within the walls of the vesting.

Dont forget its shape which is very cool and was common back in the 15th century.
Very glad to see that the whole project to bring this veste back to its older glorydays worked out soo well.

A true Gem and a great part of Dutch History!

It is very important that we still can find places which are not locked down during this COVID-19 time.
Of course musea are closedown but you can enter this impressive fortress which was never captured by enemies.
In the form of five-pointed star it is surrounded by canals.
The town behind the walls and embankments has beer restored in 20-th century but looks pretty similar as original drawings.
You can spend all day long at this place.

It is a small village behind defensive fortress wall. The last time we're here was in 2011 and it was free of charge. Nowadays you have to get through the entrance and need a ticket to get in the village. It's nice to walk around but don't expect too much what you can get in the village.

This is a pleasant restored 16th Century fort, in a quiet, rural part of The Netherlands, close to the German border. Visitors can stroll around the fort at their leisure, but access to some of the buildings hosting the museum displays requires the purchase of a ticket from the kiosk near the car park. We found the museum displays to be of moderate interest - the evocative former synagogue perhaps being the highlight - preferring to explore the fort (and the accompanying village that now occupies it) in a less-structured manner. Walking around the perimeter walls gives you an interesting perspective on the fort, although it's not possible to fully appreciate the full star-shaped layout from any of the buildings within - a viewing tower would be a great addition to the site. We spent an afternoon here and felt it was worth the detour.

With my girlfriend we were doing a trip by bicycle from Netherlands to Germany by the coast. We’ve heard about that place so we drove from the coast, specially for this place.
Very disappointing !
Nothing in English, the fort is nice, little and it doesn’t worth to go there (only if you’re really closed and you don’t have anything else to do).
Of course you won’t realize that the fort looks like a star (need a plane or a drone)
There are 2 bars/restaurant (the only place to eat in town)
If you speak Dutch and you are near that place, it’s nice to spend a couple hours but don’t expect too much

Entrance to the village is free but to visit some buildings like the museum you need to buy a ticket at the info centre on the parking lot. If you're in the general area it's definitely worth dropping by for a few hours to stroll around a bit and perhaps have a spot of food at one of the restaurants.

The notice and the video are only in Dutch. They didn’t tell us at the entrance and we are disappointed. It doesn’t make sense for a touristic place

This star fortress from the late 16th century, was an important fort in the defence of the Netherlands until the mid-19th century. Nowadays, the museum represents the fort as it was in its heyday of 1742. It is well worth a detour to what then was the main thoroughfare between Münster in Germany to Groningen in Friesland. Enjoy the peace!

The staff were very good and let us leave our motorcycle equipment at the reception.
The. place was very interesting but they haven’t yet translated the vast majority is of the museums exhibits into English which is a shame .
We still enjoyed it there is a really nice stall there cooked fish or you can have the local delicacy herring really nice with very friendly lady serving the fish I would recommend and cheap.

We decided visit the distinctive little walled village of Vesting Bourtange while in the area. We chose to go on a Sunday as it was a market day & there are many shops with crafts & souvenirs within the ancient buildings. There are several stalls to try traditional fare too, so a nice place to spend a few hours.
