A beautiful 20th-century masterpiece featuring colourful borders, a landscape garden and a collection of follies Woolbeding is a modern garden of two halves, with the colour-themed garden rooms surrounding the house, plus a landscape garden. A gentle stroll over the open pasture land provides views of the River Rother and leads to the ruined abbey and on to the Chinese-style bridge and waterfall. Please note that all visits to the gardens must be pre-booked and can be pre-booked online or by telephone.

You have to book in advance to get a minibus from Midhurst to drive you to these gardens. It's worth the effort for the lovely setting but it is a bit of a pain! You'll get short shrift from the NT staff if you try to park anywhere near the gardens themselves.

Not easy to get to because you have to book a place on the (free) NT minibus from Midhurst, but well worth the extra effort. The gardens are not huge but are beautifully planted,.

Something different from the historic houses often associated with the National Trust. OK the travel arrangements do make one apprehensive but parking in Midhurst is inexpensive (we paid just £1 for more than enough time to visit) and the minibus journey of just a few minutes was excellent. But the gardens are even better (no hiking or walking boots needed)!... More

I visited on Friday on a near perfect day. The fact that it takes a bit of effort to get to the gardens I think makes the reward more special. The gardens (plural as there are multiple 'rooms') are a true delight. I spent about 3 hours walking and wandering, stopping for a tea, listening to one of the volunteers... More

One of the nicest National Trust Gardens iI have visited and a real delight on a hot day. I booked by telephone to reserve a parking space and this was available as soon as we arrived. The National Trust staff were welcoming and informative and we enjoyed some delightful walks without any crowds or tour parties. The gardens are well... More

What happens when you combine fabulous good taste, world class garden designers, oodles of money, top class horticulture and passionate and knowledgable owners? Woolbeding! We had the most magical day here, on a beautiful hot summer's day. The garden is so impressive, much better than all other NT gardens. It has traditional English country garden features together with contemporary features... More

This place is a hidden gem. Only open on Thursday and by appointment. If travelling by car you'll need to park at the cheap pay and display car park at the Grange leisure centre and catch the frequent national Trust minibus shuttle to the gardens. Entry is free for National Trust members but there is a fee for non-members. You... More

Owned by National Trust but with a tenant who with his partner invested much time, effort and money (Sainsbury family money) in these 26 acres of West Sussex countryside this is a gem well worth four hours of your time. It’s very much a private garden, so public access is two days a week from April to end September via... More

We weren't sure whether this was suited to young children, but our little girls loved the fairy-tale nature of the place. Booking essential and you need to get a park and ride from Midhurst.

What a fantastic garden. One of the best National Trust gardens. Don't let it put you off that you have to book, it is so easy. Easy to park at the Grange Community car park and get on the NT (free) bus. Although there is a nice coffee shop with lovely cakes and sandwiches, we took a picnic and found... More
