Norway’s second largest glacier, Svartisen, stretches over 370 km2 and has a full 60 glacier arms. One of the most famous glacial arms is Austerdalsisen in Rana Municipality. To reach the glacier arm, you may take a 20-minute boat trip over Svartisvatnet, followed by a 3 km hike to Austerdalsisen. You can experience this exciting landscape, which was covered by the glacier just a few decades ago. Austerdalsisen deposits crevassed ice into the water and ice cold glacial rivers. It is a majestic sight. The boat across Svartisvatnet only operates during the summer season. Please contact Polarsirkelen Reiseliv for boat schedules: Phone + 47 75 13 92 00

We visited this 20 years ago. The glacier was larger then. It is a 3km hike from the boat drop of to the glacier. Be prepared to hike. Also, the boat to the glacier only goes a few times a day so be sure to check the times before you go.

Beautiful view of the glacier, and the joy of seeing sea eagles on the way back to the ship. Wonderful day, do visit.

Only saw the glacier from our Cruise Ship which got us a close as was possible. What an amazing sight in the afternoon sun which broke through the clouds just as we arrived. Made me want to be able to get off and hike up to it.

As the second largest glacier in Norway!!Did sail to it on a Northern Lights cruise ,the sail up the fjord and passed the polar circle which was interesting .Beautiful valleys with rivers flowing down ,steep mountains and the coastline .Saw sheep being transported by boat.!!!

The hike itself is not the easiest, but when you get to the end all is forgotten. Magical place which simply needs to be seen.

I had seen glaciers before and even hiked a bit on Vatnajökull, but Svartisen is not to miss. You can either take the boat (20 min) back and forth to the other margin (150 NOK) or walk these 7 km. Then, you will have to walk up to the glacier (6 km back and forth). Since the second part is... More

We saved 150 kr by not using the boat. It's total of 14 km hiking to the edge of Svartisen and back. Proper trail or hiking shoes are recommended because the path next to the lake is very demanding and partly quite wet. But it's worth it.

A beautiful 15 minute walk from the fjord through birch woods to the viewing platform beside the lake. Stunning views of the glacier. Although it looks as if it would be possible to walk to the tip of the glacier in a few minutes, we were told that it was actually 5km away, and unfortunately we did not have the... More

Here we are supposed to review the Austerdalsisen glacier tongue of the Svartisen. However, a lot of the reviews written before described experience from a trip from the Hurtigruten, which visits the Engenbreen (not the Austerdalsisen) glacier tongue. The Austerdalsisen is located south of the Engenbreen on the oppsite side of the Svartisen. It can only be reached from Mo... More
