Our group of 4 did both the daytime tour and a dusk tour, on two separate days. We were in small groups and Jim, the owner, gave us a real insight into both the wildlife and the impact of the big fires in 2020.
The vegetation is regrowing at a great rate, and there was plenty of wildlife to see. Lots of koalas, Roos, and Tamar Wallabies, and we saw two echidnas up close on the dusk tour. Staying at Western KI cabins gave us close easy access.

We did both a day and night tour in November. The weather was not good, so we saw little wildlife but despite that (as we saw koalas and kangaroos elsewhere) this was well worth doing. Jim is a force of nature. His knowledge, enthusiasm and experience make his stories of the sanctuary and the recovery from the fires totally engaging. Given the weather, Jim offered to cancel and refund our night tour, but we were pleased to stick with it.

Jim gently guided our group around his sanctuary where we saw mating kangaroos, mother koalas and joeys up close. Spectacular ‘Yakka’ that were in full recovery from the bush fires were in abundance. We learnt about the initial inhabitants and those that came later, their survival and what came next. Plant species were explained and we learnt how just how life changing the 2020 bush fires were. I would thoroughly recommend this tour.

We did both a daytime tour and a nighttime tour. Both were superb and I highly recommend them. Our guide Jim, was extraordinarily knowledgeable and had a deep commitment to conservation and the land and numerous animals that can be found in the sanctuary. We saw several koalas with joeys, including one with a tiny 6 month old that we had never seen before. We saw numerous kangaroos and wallabies. Everytime we come to Kangaroo Island, the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is always on the top of our priority list. This year, like others, did not disappoint.

I can’t say enough about this place. We visited in October and were lucky enough to do a nocturnal tour with Jim. Form the minute he got there it was an amazing tour. Jim is so knowledgeable and you can see how much he cares for the land and the animals. We saw so many koalas, kangaroos and wallabies in their natural habitat and learned so much! And the tour was super relaxed and not rushed, it even went over time and it didn’t matter, Jim asked if we didn’t mind sticking around longer to see more. It’s not an exaggeration to say the night tour was our highlight on KI. This place is authentic, not a tourist trap. Please visit and support!!

During a three week vacation that my wife and I were on in Australia, our primary goal was to see Koalas and Kangaroos, but not in a zoo. This tour satisfied that requirement and then some! The tour guide went at a great pace and had plenty of interesting knowledge to share. He was clearly passionate about the animals and conservation, but also just seemed excited to share his passion with interested people. This was the first tour I've ever been on where it's gone on a little long, and the tour guide says "well do you guys mind sticking around for a little more?" I always expect to be rushed out on time by a tour guide, but not this time!

Are you the type of person that values our environment and the animals within it? Do you want a detailed insight into, and understanding of Koalas and Kangaroos? Do you want to understand the devastating impact of the 2020 Kangaroo Island fire, but also the ensuing, miraculous, and hope filled regeneration? Then this is the experience for you. Our visit to the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary was one of the main highlights to fantastic stay on Kangaroo Island. Informative, inspiring and beautiful the property and tour were perfect. Jim was the consummate host. Don’t spoil your trip, go to the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary😊

We had a wonderful time on our tour of the sanctuary. Jim was so knowledgeable about the plants, animals and ecology surrounding the regeneration of the area after the fire. We saw several koalas, including a mum with a young joey, loads of kangaroos and Cape Barren geese. So lovely to see these animals flourishing in the wild with the stewardship of Jim and the sanctuary staff.

Jim was a legend! Highly knowledgeable, really entertaining and took the time to answer all our questions in a detailed way. There was so many koalas to see, alongside kangaroos and historical plants. Get along to support a great eco business recovering after the fires!
