What an architectural gem! The finishes, the furnishings, the reading rooms - all as it would have been in the 1960s when the Library opened. The permanent exhibition of documents relating to the discovery and founding of modern Australia were amazing and indeed moving - particularly Captain Cook's journal and the convict diary on display. There's plenty of room to... More

The Library has a room titled its Treasures Exhibit-which include Captain Cook's journal as well as many artifacts relating to Australian history. The room can be done in about an hour, but is well worth a visit. The library also boast numerous stained glass windows-big, think glass windows that are just glorious-and several beautiful tapestries. Unless you are actually using... More

The National Library puts on tours most days and we took the opportunity of doing one that is only available on Thursdays. This tour takes you behind the scenes into the depths of the building, where the majority of the books are held till someone orders one. Here you can see Isaac, the robot that gets the books for you... More

had no intention of going to the library but decided at last minute. Glad we did as there were a couple of exhibitions on at the time, one in particular "Sell"about advertising in Australia in the past

The current exhibits of History of Advertising in Australia from colonial times and Athol Shmith Fashion Photography are both excellently presented and well worth visiting. The permanent exhibit of Treasures of Australia is comprehensive and informative. There is free entry to all displays.

Especially during special events this place is soooo annoying. the venue is spectacular, the views over the lake are gorgeous, the library itself is a pleasure to visit, then you line up for ages to eat their expensive tasteless, poor range and wonder why you bothered. Bring a sandwich and sit out on the steps to enjoy the vista all... More

The National Library is well worth visiting, particularly the Treasures exhibition. The tapestries are very interesting. Look for the ones in the reading room as well as the foyer

I was particularly interested in this exhibition as I had worked in Advertising and TV in the late 1960s. It brought back many memories of those days and the generations around that period. How much more sophisticated the technology is today. Everything I did as a Graphic Designer was by hand.

We went to the National Library last month and had a great time. The current exhibition - The Sell, is wonderful and is defiantly a must-see! The food at the Bookplate cafe was superb. The coffee was especially good. The building itself is an excellent example of mid 60s architecture. A visit to Canberra wouldn't be complete without visiting the... More
