Great place to find out about the history of the rocks from pre European to present day. It is free however you can donate a goldcoin. The staff were very approachable and knowledgeable. Suitable for all ages, however there are stairs to climb and three levels as it is an old warehouse. Good hour spent here.

Walk around and interact with the history of The Rocks. Gold coin donation and so much history. Cool, modern and well thought out museum. Mix of artifacts, videos and maps, find out about the History of the rocks and the Harbor Bridge.

This is a museum that requests just 1 AUD donation to visit. It has some very interesting videos on the second floor, especially one about the creation of the bridge that we found very relevant to our Sydney visit. We learned more about the aboriginal tribe from the area which complemented our tour of the royal botanic gardens well. Highly... More

We discovered this almost by accident and are very glad we did. There is a wealth of well presented information about the history of the area and the staff are very helpful. All the better for being free!

Good to see a record of the changes this area has undergone over the years. I appreciated the telling of the fight to maintain some of the historical houses etc. Great welcome from staff member too, sorry I can't remember his name but he knows his stuff.

Excellent museum. Lady on reception was very good and engaged the children. Nothing was too much trouble. For a free experience, gift recommend.

Staying in The Rocks

Neighbourhood Profile
The Rocks
The first residents of the Rocks were convicts and sailors from the old nation. As the oldest neighbourhood in the city, the area's cobblestone streets host more than 100 heritage sites and buildings, including the oldest house in Sydney, Camden Cottage, which was built in 1816. Taste a “midi “ or a “schooner” of beer and dine “al fresco” on the waterfront at some of the oldest pubs in Sydney. The weekend markets at the Rocks are where you can find local artists' hand-made souvenirs, organic food and designer jewelry in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. To enjoy some of the best Australian and international contemporary art, the MCA museum is open every day and select evenings. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, be sure to save energy to dance the night away at the area's many late night entertainment venues.
