Did the Mereenie Outer Loop in 4Wd but towing an on road tradie trailer decked out as a camper got through with no issues, though the corrugations in patches slowed us to 20-30 kmh. Most of the trip was done at 70kmh and few bits...More

A fun drive and a bit of an adventure. I’d expected more from the scenery on the loop itself but it turned out that the scenery on Larapinta road was a lot better than the loop. Quite a lot of traffic too. The road when...More

We were told that this road was horrible to drive, but don't be scared off by hotel staff. It is fine to drive even when not graded as we did this week. You just need to go slow in parts with slippery sand. The road...More

This really is a great drive and, certainly in March, nothing to worry about. We drove from Alice Springs to Uluru and decided to take what is now called the Red Centre Way so we could stop off at some of the natural attractions along...More

Not having driven much on dirt roads we were extremely apprehensive and although the corrugations were rough and uncomfortable we never felt worried for our own safety or the vehicle. The rental company insisted on a 4 WD. It was definitely much more interesting and...More

I drove through in April from Kings Creek Station to Ellery Creek Big Hoke campground. Went in convoy with a family we met who were towing a caravan and they suggested we buddy up just in case anything happened to either of us. No drama...More

We were advised by Kings Canyon that a 4x4 was required and we were given the impression that they would not issue the pass unless they could actually see the 4x4 we had. The tourist information at Alice Springs advise only a car such as...More

We took the road from Kings Canyon to Glen Helen in September. It's pretty corrugated and some of the floodways were steep, but you can easily do 70-80km/h in a 4wd most of the way. We drove a Ford Ranger towing an off-road camper trailer...More

As we were not experienced off road drivers we were a little apprehensive about the drive. We were in a all wheel drive car and the drive was easy. The road is very wide and although there are some bumpy sections there were no areas...More

I'm am travelling to red centre in June 2015. I an hiring a Hertz RAV4 4wd. After a three night stay in Yurala and a 2 night stay in Kings Canyon we will then drive to Alice. I hired from Hertz as they allow their 4wD on the mereenie loop. But after reading forums I am a little concerned taking a RAV4 up there. My plan was to drive up loop then via Glen Helen for lunch and then take I a few gorges and waterholes on way to Alice. But if the road is that bad, and me being a novice dirt road driver, I will have to go so slow it may become unenjoyable and arduous. It may end up being quicker to back track and go up sealed highway from Kings. But as I have only three nights in Alice (that's only two days to see sights out from and within Alice) I really wanted to drive the loop so I could see some of the sights on the way to Alice. What's evertones advice please?

I drove this road years ago in a two wheel drive mazda van. I have also been over it in a school bus tour a few years ago. I suggest it is easy to do in a four wheel drive with care and a reasonable speed and not in a hurry... More
